The Brooklyn Nets are facing another challenge as they head to Atlanta to take on the Hawks this Thursday. With key players like Michael Porter Jr. (right ankle sprain), Day'Ron Sharpe (left thumb sprain), and Nolan Traore (rest) sidelined, the Nets will have to dig deep into their roster. Ziaire Williams is also questionable due to illness, adding another layer of uncertainty to their lineup.
The team recently made the tough decision to shut down standout rookie Egor Demin for the season because of a plantar fascia injury. This adds to a growing injury list following Sharpe and Williams' absence in their recent 138-100 defeat to the Detroit Pistons. During that game, veteran Terance Mann was benched, giving more playing time to Chaney Johnson, a recent two-way signing, and Josh Minott, a new trade acquisition.
These lineup adjustments come on the heels of back-to-back wins against the Pistons and the Memphis Grizzlies. Those victories, however, have shaken up Brooklyn’s position in the NBA's draft lottery stakes.
Last week, the Nets were neck-and-neck with the Indiana Pacers for second place in the draft lottery standings, and they were within reach of the Sacramento Kings for the top spot. But the Nets, leaning on their seasoned players, managed a comeback win over the Pistons on Saturday. They followed that with a victory against a depleted Grizzlies team on Monday.
These wins have pushed Brooklyn down to fourth place in the lottery standings. They now have one more win than the Kings and Wizards, who sit in second and third, and two more than the Pacers, who hold the first spot.
Despite this shift, the Nets still have control over their draft lottery fate. Their upcoming schedule includes two games against the Kings, and matchups with both the Pacers and Wizards. Losses in these crucial games could boost the Nets to the top of the draft lottery odds come May.
