When the Golden State Warriors brought Kristaps Porzingis on board, it seemed like a match made in basketball heaven. But as the season unfolds, the fit isn't quite as seamless as fans had hoped.
Porzingis, the former Atlanta Hawks center, has been dealing with injuries that have kept him in and out of the lineup. His recent return to action hasn't been the triumphant comeback the Warriors were banking on.
In his initial games back on March 7 and March 10, Porzingis struggled to find his rhythm. It's been a challenging period for the Latvian big man, and the dream of his successful tenure with Golden State is already facing serious doubts.
Porzingis should theoretically thrive with the Warriors' system. Yet, without the full roster, the dynamics aren't clicking.
The absence of Stephen Curry and Jimmy Butler is a significant factor. Butler's season-ending ACL injury and Curry's ongoing knee troubles, which have sidelined him for 15 games, leave Porzingis without the support he needs to excel.
Curry's presence on the court is crucial for Porzingis. The spacing, three-point threat, and playmaking that Curry provides create an environment where Porzingis can truly shine, ideally as a secondary or even tertiary option. Without these elements, Porzingis is left trying to shoulder more than his share of the offensive load, which isn't his strong suit.
In his first game back against the Oklahoma City Thunder, Porzingis logged 23 minutes, scoring nine points with five rebounds, five assists, and a block. However, his shooting was off, hitting just 3-of-10 from the field and missing all three attempts from deep.
His second outing, a 130-124 overtime loss to the Chicago Bulls, showed some improvement. In 20 minutes, he posted 17 points, four rebounds, two assists, and four blocks. Still, his shooting woes continued, with a 5-of-13 performance from the field and 2-of-6 from beyond the arc.
Despite the better numbers in his second game, the outcome was the same: another loss. With his contract expiring at the end of the season, the clock is ticking for the Warriors to find a way to make this partnership work.
The combination of Porzingis' ongoing struggles, injury issues, and the uncertain timeline for Curry's return casts doubt on Porzingis' future with the team. It seems the Warriors' experiment with Porzingis might be nearing its end before it truly began.
