As the Atlanta Hawks chart their path to NBA contention, a pivotal question looms: Who will step up as Jalen Johnson’s co-star? Enter Jonathan Kuminga, who might just be the answer the Hawks are seeking.
If championship banners are the ultimate goal, the team needs leaders who can deliver wins. Johnson is already in the mix, but who’s next?
Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Dyson Daniels, while talented, seem more suited as elite role players rather than the definitive No. 2 on a championship squad. But Kuminga, since his arrival at the trade deadline, has shown flashes of untapped potential that could elevate him to that coveted role.
Since joining Atlanta, Kuminga has made a significant impact. After a turbulent stint with the Golden State Warriors, he’s found a fresh start with the Hawks, and he’s seizing the opportunity.
The Hawks have been on fire, winning 10 straight games since Kuminga’s arrival, even though he hasn’t played in all of them. He’s displayed glimpses of stardom with his scoring, defense, and remarkable athleticism, contributing across the board.
In his six appearances for Atlanta, Kuminga is averaging 22.7 minutes per game, with one start under his belt. During this stretch, he’s posted averages of 14.8 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.0 steals per game, shooting an impressive 56.6% from the field and a scorching 58.3% from beyond the arc on 2.0 attempts per game.
While these stats might not yet scream “second option on a championship team,” Kuminga is only 23 and has plenty of room to grow. Drafted seventh overall in 2021, his potential was clear, and now the Hawks have a chance to unlock it fully.
If Kuminga continues to develop, he could become a standout player. The big question is whether he can rise to be the second-best player on a title contender.
If he can, the Hawks might have their dynamic duo in Johnson and Kuminga. If not, they’ll need to look beyond their current roster for answers.
