The Cleveland Cavaliers swung big for LeBron James and came up empty, but they’re not wasting time figuring out what comes next.
After chasing the four-time NBA champion as hard as anyone over the last week, Cleveland now has its eyes on Jonathan Kuminga. The Cavaliers were hoping for a homecoming with James, who had already spent two separate stints with the franchise, and at one point they were viewed as one of the favorites to land him.
“I would be stunned if he picked a team that wasn’t Golden State or Cleveland,” a Western Conference executive told FOS’ Alex Schiffer.
That dream is gone now. James is headed to the Philadelphia 76ers, where he wants one more shot at an NBA title.
“LeBron James is signing with the Philadelphia 76ers for his final run at another NBA championship, he announced Friday,” ESPN’s Dave McMenamin wrote. “James, 41, is signing a two-year, $8 million contract with a player option, Klutch Sports Group CEO Rich Paul told ESPN's Shams Charania.”
With James off the board, Cleveland is shifting to a different kind of wing target. The Cavaliers are reportedly pushing hard for Kuminga through a sign-and-trade, and Max Strus appears to be the piece they’d be willing to move to make it happen.
“The Cavaliers are ramping up their pursuit of Jonathan Kuminga via sign-and-trade after missing out on LeBron James. Cleveland is actively shopping Max Strus, who Kuminga would replace on the wing. A potential framework might feature Strus + 2nd-round pick capital for Kuminga,” NBA reporter Evan Sidery wrote.
Atlanta has been mentioned as a possible landing spot for Strus, though the Hawks don’t have much roster flexibility right now. Even so, Strus would give them the kind of bench shooting they could use, and he looks like a more realistic sign-and-trade fit for Atlanta than what the Los Angeles Lakers could offer.
For Cleveland, the focus is clear: keep pressing for Kuminga. He’s become one of the most coveted players in free agency, and the Cavaliers are trying to land the athletic wing they wanted in the first place. If they can pull it off, Kuminga would slide into a lineup with Donovan Mitchell and James Harden.
