The NBA Cup schedule already gives Atlanta Hawks fans a date circled in ink: Nov. 6, when Washington comes to town to open Group C play.
That matchup matters for more than just the tournament standings. If the Wizards do not visit Atlanta before then, it would be the first time Trae Young plays in Atlanta since being traded to Washington last January.
The full Hawks schedule is still set to be unveiled tomorrow afternoon, so there is still a chance Washington and Atlanta meet in the city before Nov. 6.
But for now, the Cup slate has put that return front and center.
Atlanta’s group also includes the Chicago Bulls, Charlotte Hornets, and Boston Celtics. The Hawks will host Washington on Nov. 6 at 7:00 p.m.
ET, visit Chicago on Nov. 13 at 8:00 p.m. ET, host Charlotte on Nov. 20 at 7:00 p.m.
ET, and close group play at Boston on Nov. 27 at 8:00 p.m. ET.
Young has already been back in Atlanta since the trade, but he has not played against his old team yet. When he spoke with the media in Atlanta during a road game for the Wizards, he made clear how he feels about the city and the fans:
"Like, for me, that's a big reason I'm, like, even instead of doing this, like, for me, I just wanted the Hawks fans to know, like, how much I, I mean, love and appreciate them, like, since day one, like, getting drafted, I mean, obviously with the trade and things like that, like, but for me to come in and I still found a way to make a name for myself, make a name for my team, and try and try to put this city on the map where people were talking about us. And I just, you can't do that without the fans.
The fans showed us so much love throughout the years I was here. Even the years it was down, I felt like there was still a lot of love.
So I mean, I got so much love for this city and the fans."
If that first meeting does happen in State Farm Arena on Nov. 6, Young figures to hear it from the crowd. The source of the story is obvious: a former franchise face coming back in a new uniform.
From a Cup standpoint, Atlanta has a real path to the top of the group. Washington becomes a much more interesting opponent with Young, Anthony Davis, and No. 1 overall pick AJ Dybantsa, but the Hawks are still projected to finish ahead of them in the standings. Chicago is expected to be near the bottom of the Eastern Conference, and Charlotte is likely to take a step back after trading away LaMelo Ball and Miles Bridges.
That leaves Boston as the likely obstacle. Even after trading Jaylen Brown, the Celtics are still expected to be a strong team, and that Black Friday matchup could wind up carrying the most weight in Group C.
