Gilbert Arenas isn’t interested in watching Bronny James take all the heat while another top pick slides by with hardly a whisper.
On a recent episode of The Gil’s Arena, the former NBA All-Star took aim at the way NBA media has handled the conversation around James, arguing that the attention has been warped by nepotism talk and by the fact that Bronny is LeBron James’ son. Arenas also brought up Zaccharie Risacher, saying the former first overall pick in his class has barely been part of the public discussion at all.
DeMarcus Cousins had brought up the old debate about European players being better than Americans, and noted that Risacher somehow never gets pulled into that conversation even though he was the No. 1 overall pick in 2024. Arenas jumped in with his own blunt critique of the coverage.
“They were too busy bashing Bronny for nepotism that they forgot there was a number one pick they never even mentioned… Zaccharie. Yeah, you remember?
He got drafted number one. He’s been a- ever since, so there’s no point in even mentioning him now,” Gilbert Arenas said.
He kept going, calling out the way the media fixated on James instead of the top of the draft.
“You didn’t want to mention him when he got drafted, when the number one pick was on the line. Y’all went straight to the 55th.
Mr. 55th. Y’all went all the way down there for a n-a who doesn’t make the team and wasn’t going to play much.
You killed him, and a whole number one pick was just chilling and relaxing,” Arenas further added.
Risacher’s NBA path has already changed in a major way. The Mavericks recently traded for him in a three-team deal that sent Lu Dort to the Hawks after just his second season in Atlanta. Over those two years, Risacher averaged 11.1 points, 3.7 rebounds and 1.2 assists, while shooting 45.7% from the field and 36.0% from three-point range in nearly 24 minutes a night.
Even with that kind of production, Arenas’ point was less about the numbers and more about the spotlight, or lack of it. Risacher has not drawn nearly the same volume of scrutiny that Bronny James has faced, even though James was the 55th pick and has been fighting to carve out a place in the league while carrying his last name.
James’ early NBA line with the Lakers has been modest: 2.7 points, 1.1 assists and 0.5 rebounds, along with shooting splits of 37.4% from the field and 34.8% from three. He’s averaged just eight minutes per game, spending most of his time in garbage time when the result is already decided.
The reaction to his preseason play, especially around Redick’s recent candid comment, spread quickly and became a social-media talking point. At the same time, the questions around Risacher have been framed differently, with more focus on easing the pressure that comes with being a No. 1 pick.
Arenas’ message, then, wasn’t really a defense of Risacher so much as a complaint about how uneven the criticism has been. In his view, the 55th pick is taking hits because of his family name while the first pick has been left largely alone.
James still has a long way to go if he wants to step out from under his father’s shadow and establish his own lane. If he ever becomes part of a championship run, that conversation could shift. For now, he’s trying to hold onto his place in the league as he moves toward the final guaranteed season of his contract, with 2027-28 listed as a team option.

Hawks Still Have One Roster Hole They May Need To Trade For
The Hawks have spent preseason trying to sort out a few lingering roster questions, and the biggest ones remain on the defensive end. Atlanta has looked for more stability behind the starting group, especially at backup power forward and in that tricky third-center spot, where the margin for error gets thin quickly once injuries or foul trouble show up. For a team trying to firm up its identity, those are not minor details.
One proposed fix would send Josh Hart, Corey Kispert, Asa Newell and future second-round picks from Atlanta to the Clippers in exchange for a more dependable third center and some defensive depth. It is the kind of deal that would ripple beyond the Hawks, since the Knicks and Clippers would also have to weigh the roster and contract fallout, but it speaks to a basic reality Atlanta may still be facing: even after preseason, one more move could be needed to close the gap. Hawks Rotation Battle Is Heating Up Right Before The Opener
With one preseason game left before the opener in Orlando, the Hawks are still sorting through a rotation that has not been fully available for evaluation. Key players have sat out at different points, which has left the staff balancing recent strong showings from Jalen Johnson, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Onyeka Okongwu and CJ McCollum against the bigger question of how the group will actually fit once the games count.
Aaron Wiggins, Lu Dort, Kingston Flemings, Mouhamed Gueye and Jock Landale are shaping up as the top rotation candidates, with Flemings expected to have a meaningful bench role. Beyond that, the picture remains fluid for Corey Kispert, Dorian Finney-Smith, Asa Newell and Zuby Ejiofor, whose minutes could swing depending on health and how they perform in the final tune-up. Zuby Ejiofor Just Gave Hawks Fans Hope For A Real Weakness
A few encouraging signs emerged for Atlanta in the recent matchup with Oklahoma City, and Zuby Ejiofor was right in the middle of it. Playing 23 minutes off the bench, he finished with 15 points, nine rebounds and three assists while giving Quin Snyder useful minutes behind Jock Landale. The most eye-catching part was on the glass, where Ejiofor kept possessions alive and flashed the kind of energy the Hawks have been looking for.
For a team still sorting out its identity, that kind of bench production matters. Atlanta has been searching for more bite in the rebounding battle, and Ejiofors showing offered a reminder that help can come from unexpected places while the roster continues to develop. It was one game, but it was the sort of performance that can make a weakness feel a little less fixed. [Read more 🡒]
