In a move that’s sure to spark interest across the league, the Atlanta Falcons have signed quarterback Tua Tagovailoa to a one-year, team-friendly deal. But the real buzz is about the Falcons’ long-term plans, as they still see their 2024 first-round pick, Michael Penix Jr., as the starter once he’s back to full health.
Tagovailoa, speaking to the press for the first time since signing, had a clear message for Penix and the competition ahead.

“Competition is just part of the NFL,” Tagovailoa shared, reflecting on his college days filled with similar challenges. “I’m no stranger to it.
Competition pushes everyone to be better. I’m looking forward to working with Mike.”
With Penix on the mend from a fall surgery to repair a partially torn ACL, Tagovailoa has a prime opportunity to settle into the Falcons’ offense under new head coach Kevin Stefanski. This could be his chance to make a mark while Penix focuses on his recovery.
“For me, it’s about making the most of this opportunity,” Tagovailoa expressed. “Building relationships with the team and playing the game I’ve dreamed of my whole life. I’m here to be present and seize the moment.”
Reflecting on Past Challenges with the Dolphins
Tagovailoa’s journey hasn’t been without its hurdles. Last December, former Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel benched him due to performance issues, and he ended the 2025 season with the third-most turnovers in the league. Critics question his fit in Stefanski’s system, but Tagovailoa is candid about wanting a fresh start.
“Last year wasn’t my best,” he admitted. “I need to play better football. There’s no sugarcoating that.”
While it’s uncertain if Tagovailoa will secure the starting role with the Falcons, his determination to prove himself as Atlanta’s top choice is evident. As the summer unfolds, all eyes will be on how this competition shapes up in the Falcons’ camp.
