Tua Tagovailoa Reveals Key Influence Behind Falcons Decision

Tua Tagovailoa credits Atlanta Falcons' leadership for pivotal support in his latest career move, as he joins the team ready to tackle new challenges and competition.

Tua Tagovailoa is gearing up for a fresh chapter in his NFL journey, as he joins the Atlanta Falcons for the 2026 season. After six years with the Miami Dolphins, the quarterback was released this offseason, opening the door to new opportunities despite recent struggles and health concerns.

Tagovailoa's decision to head to Atlanta sets the stage for a competitive battle with Michael Penix Jr., who faced his own challenges in 2025. This move could very well see Tagovailoa stepping into the starting role.

In a conversation with Atlanta media, Tagovailoa highlighted the influence of former quarterback and current Falcons president, Matt Ryan, on his decision. "We've talked outside of that with football, if I had any questions his room is always open for me to go up there," Tagovailoa shared, underscoring the value of having an open line of communication with one of the game’s greats.

The quarterback also emphasized his enduring passion for the game. "The drive is there. It's a blessing for me to be in this position, this opportunity I have to play for the Falcons," he said.

Tagovailoa's career has been a rollercoaster. The Alabama standout has shown flashes of brilliance, even earning MVP votes at one point, but inconsistency and injuries have hampered his progress.

Last season, he appeared in 14 games, throwing for 2,660 yards, with 20 touchdowns against 15 interceptions. Despite his efforts, the Dolphins struggled, leading to the decision to part ways with him and his substantial contract.

Atlanta offers Tagovailoa a chance at reinvention. Even if Penix secures the starting job, Tagovailoa is positioned well to seize opportunities as they arise.

His one-year deal with the Falcons is a smart move for both parties. At worst, Atlanta gains a seasoned backup; at best, Tagovailoa thrives and sets himself up for an extension or a lucrative deal elsewhere next offseason.
