Roddy White Just Doubled Down On Atlantas New Direction

Former Falcons wide receiver Roddy White shows unwavering support for Matt Ryan's leadership in the new regime amidst discussions on sports betting and team resilience.

Roddy White is looking at the Falcons’ new era with a familiar kind of trust.

The former Atlanta receiver, who spent his entire 11-year career with the team after being drafted in the first round in 2005, has stayed close to the organization since retiring after the 2015 season. White finished with 808 catches for 10,863 yards and 63 touchdowns, and he still sounds like someone who knows exactly what the Falcons are supposed to feel like.

That connection came up again as White and FanDuel set up an event at LikeMinds Sports Bar on Sunday from noon to 1:30 p.m. ET.

Fans were invited to meet White, get items signed, take part in a longest drive golf competition for prizes, and watch the Falcons’ Week 8 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The gathering also included discussion about the legalization of sports betting in Georgia, along with the benefits of legal, regulated wagering such as stronger consumer protections, responsible gaming tools and tax revenue that could support important state priorities.

White’s bigger point, though, was about the Falcons themselves and the people steering the franchise now. He said Matt Ryan, his former quarterback, has brought a workmanlike edge to the job since taking office.

“It’s a very challenged job, just having everything that you have to do on a day-to-day basis,” White said. “He’s always going to be a guy that’s always in as far as being on the field, watching, paying attention, the players and seeing where they are at, because he’s done it before.”

White said Ryan’s background helps him understand the grind and stay connected to the team in a way players notice. He also described Ryan as a demanding presence who keeps people accountable and doesn’t allow bad habits to linger.

The former Falcons star had plenty to say about the current offense, too. On Drake London, White saw a receiver with toughness, confidence and enough physicality to keep chains moving. He also pointed to the emotion London shows, including after Malik Mustapha hit him in the head on Sunday, as part of what makes him stand out.

And when the conversation turned to Michael Penix Jr., White was direct.

“I think he is going to be one of the better ones in the league,” White said. “I think he’s going to be one of the better ones in the league here soon.

I’m a very big fan of what he brings to the table. He can make each and every throw.”

White liked the way the coaching staff has tailored the offense to Penix Jr.’s strengths, including boots and under-center looks. He also noted that Ryan has been around the third-year quarterback, helping him with snaps under center and offering support whenever needed.

White also pushed back hard on the wave of people minimizing Atlanta’s win over the 6-0 San Francisco 49ers. After Emmanuel Acho said the loss meant little to the 49ers, White answered on X and then took the argument further.

“San Francisco has had multiple injuries since the beginning of the season and they’ve still found ways to win football games,” White said. “They went out and they beat Seattle, they went out and beat the Rams, which are two of the teams that are picked to win (the Super Bowl).”

He said the reaction around that game felt like a double standard.

“They had injuries and nobody complained about anything,” he said about the 49ers’ wins over top-tier teams. “They’re just, ‘Oh, this team’s so good, they find ways to win.’

And then when it gets to the Falcons, ‘Oh, it’s the most meaningless win,’ ... everybody knows better. Every Sunday when you go out on the field, especially if you’re playing in this league, you want to win football games.

There are no moral victories.”

To White, the way Atlanta handled the undefeated 49ers mattered. He pointed to the offense putting up points without settling for field goals, doing it against a relatively healthy defense, and forcing multiple turnovers against a team that normally protects the ball.

That win, he believes, should help at home, too. White noted the frustration around Mercedes-Benz Stadium being filled with Bears and 49ers fans in recent weeks, but said the fan base will respond when the team gives it something to believe in.

“When I was there, Coach Smith would always tell us, "Hey, you win all your home games and then you split the road games." That was his mentality, like we do not lose at home. So, I'm happy we got off of that skid and we beat a really good team, which now, the fan base will have more trust.”

The Falcons won’t get another chance to test that at home for a while. They travel to Tampa Bay on Sunday, then head to Madrid against the Cincinnati Bengals, a game scheduled as a home date. Atlanta’s next home game is Nov. 15 against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Falcons NFC South Push May Not Bring The Deadline Move Fans Want

The Falcons are sitting at 3-4 and still close enough to the NFC South race that the trade deadline has become a natural talking point, especially for a team that has shown it can hang around without needing a full reset. But the front offices recent history suggests patience is more likely than a splashy swing, with Ian Cunningham taking a measured approach since arriving in January and keeping the focus on smaller, more manageable deals.

For Atlanta fans hoping for a headline-grabbing addition, that is the part that tempers expectations. The Falcons may explore the market if the right fit appears, but this does not look like a team eager to chase the biggest names or pay a steep price just to make noise before the deadline. Falcons Suddenly Have A James Pearce Jr. Decision That Could Matter Fast

James Pearce Jr. is nearing a return to the Falcons after serving an eight-game suspension, with the rookie pass rusher set to finish that stretch after the upcoming game against the Buccaneers. Atlanta took him in the first round in 2025, and his absence has left the defense waiting on a player the team clearly expected to matter quickly.

Kevin Stefanski said Pearce has complied with everything required during the suspension, but the Falcons still have a decision to make once he is back in the building. The bigger question now is how much they trust him right away, especially with his legal situation still hanging over the story after the February incident involving a former partner and law enforcement. Michael Penix Is Turning Into A Real Falcons Question Week 8

Michael Penix Jr. keeps giving the Falcons reasons to believe they may have found something real at quarterback. Since taking over in Week 3, he has settled into the job quickly, and his latest outing against the 49ers only added to the momentum around him. The performance was clean, efficient and productive, the kind of showing that tends to change the conversation around a young passer in a hurry.

Penix now has nine touchdown passes and just one interception in his stretch as the starter, and the league has taken notice. He was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week after that game, and he also landed 12th in the latest NFL.com quarterback rankings, right in the mix with some of the names Falcons fans know well. For a team still sorting out its long-term picture under center, every week like this makes the question a little more interesting. [Read more 🡒]
