Raheem Morris didn’t sound like a man eager to rewrite the Michael Penix Jr. story. When asked about the Falcons quarterback ahead of Sunday’s matchup between Atlanta and San Francisco, the 49ers defensive coordinator made it clear he still sees the same traits that made Penix such a tempting first-round gamble in the first place.
The Falcons stunned plenty of people when they used the eighth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft on Penix after already committing to Kirk Cousins on a four-year, $180 million deal. The move, pushed by former head coach Raheem Morris and former general manager Terry Fontenot, created more debate than consensus. Penix spent most of his rookie year on the sideline, then stepped in as the starter in 2025.
That second season got interrupted by a torn ACL, which kept him out for the back half of the year. But after the recovery, Penix returned in Week 3 and has looked sharp ever since. In four starts this season, he has thrown for 944 yards with six touchdowns, one interception and a 106 passer rating.
Morris, now preparing to face Atlanta for the first time since being fired after the 2025 season, had nothing but praise when asked about Penix’s growth.
“Loved the kid, loved everything about him. The personality, who he was, the thrower...
He’s back healthy and he’s probably everything that you thought and hoped for as far as being a play-action passer, a guy that can push the ball down the field, can make all the throws, go through the whole process. Just one of those guys that I have a lot of appreciation for and love for.”
When pressed about whether he’s seen a major change in Penix’s game, Morris said the biggest difference is simple: health.
“You know, just him being healthy is the main thing that has been for him. When he has been healthy, he’s had some explosive games, even as a rookie.
I can still see him going into the D.C. game and find a way to get us into that game, make us some big-time plays in order for us to go to overtime. And as he started the season last year, had some ups and downs, had some probably more ups than downs, and now you’ve seen him have a couple really big ups since he’s been back and been back in that lineup and changed that team completely.
So, it’s been pretty cool to watch.”
Atlanta has to like where this is headed. If Penix keeps performing at this level, the Falcons should be in position to avoid spending another first-round pick on a quarterback in 2027.
The challenge this week is a stiff one. San Francisco comes in 6-0, and Morris’ defense has been elite on both sides of the ball, sitting top five in DVOA on offense and defense.
Penix gets another major test Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.

Raheem Morris Returns With A Test Michael Penix Must Answer
Raheem Morris is set to come back to Atlanta in a new role, this time guiding the undefeated 49ers defense instead of running the Falcons. For a team still trying to settle in under Michael Penix Jr., the matchup adds a familiar face to an already meaningful stretch, especially with the quarterback facing another early test in his development.
Penix, the No. 8 overall pick in the 2024 draft, is expected to see Morris across the sideline when San Francisco visits. The reunion gives the Falcons a look at a coach who once led their sideline, and it puts Penix in front of a defense built to make life difficult as Atlanta tries to keep moving forward. Christian Harris Falcons Revival Is Slipping Away Fast
Christian Harris came to Atlanta this offseason looking for a reset, hoping the Falcons could offer the kind of fresh start that once seemed out of reach after injuries knocked him out of his job with the Texans. He got an early look during OTAs and appeared to have a path into the linebacker mix, but the room has shifted quickly around him as younger players have pushed their way up the board.
What looked like a chance to revive his career has now turned into a waiting game, and not a very encouraging one. Harris has slid behind Kendal Daniels, Harold Perkins Jr. and others, leaving him with a shrinking role and a spot on the roster that feels increasingly fragile as the season goes on. [Read more 🡒]
Drake London Exit Put Falcons Offense In A Tense Spot
For a stretch in the third quarter against the 49ers, the Falcons had to make do without Drake London after he went off the field for a concussion evaluation following a helmet-to-helmet hit. Atlanta was already leaning on its top wideout, and before the injury scare, London had a team-high five catches for 43 yards, a reminder of how central he has become to the offense.
The good news for the Falcons was that London was eventually cleared and returned to the game, easing what could have been a much bigger concern in a tight spot. Even so, any time a receiver with that kind of role leaves the field after a hit like that, it puts the offense on edge and leaves Atlanta watching closely for the next update. [Read more 🡒]
