Michael Penix Jr. didn’t just return to the lineup Thursday night. He made it awfully hard for the Falcons to even entertain a quarterback switch.
Atlanta walked into Week 3 with both Penix and Tua Tagovailoa active for the first time all season, and the result was a 35-14 win over the Packers at Lambeau Field. The biggest difference from the Falcons’ first two losses was obvious: the quarterback play finally looked like it belonged to a team in control.
Penix, making his first start of the season, was sharp from the jump. He finished 18 of 25 for 256 yards with a touchdown and an interception, and he did it in a game where Bijan Robinson and the run game handled plenty of the workload. For a player coming off an ACL tear, it was exactly the kind of opening statement Atlanta needed.
That’s what makes the Tua conversation so complicated now. If Penix had come out flat, the door might have opened for the Falcons to think about making a move later on.
Instead, his performance pushed that idea farther away. At the moment, there doesn’t appear to be much reason for Atlanta to bench him.
The Falcons also didn’t just win - they rolled up more than 500 yards of offense, with Drake London turning in a career day alongside the younger quarterback. The offense looked different with Penix in charge, and that difference was impossible to miss.
He also handled a Packers pass rush that had the chance to cause real problems all night. Even without Micah Parsons, the pressure still had some bite, but Penix kept delivering, especially to London, and seemed to settle in more as the game went on.
That lines up with the reporting that had pointed to the 26-year-old as Stefanski’s preferred starter. From Atlanta’s perspective, the math is simple: if the goal is to find a long-term answer at quarterback, the player still early in his rookie deal has the edge over a veteran signed for the minimum in free agency.
Tagovailoa has the Pro Bowl résumé and a track record of success, but that only matters so much right now. If he had stayed healthy, he would have held the job until Penix was ready. Instead, Penix got his shot, and now that he’s healthy, he’s making it tougher and tougher to take it away.
Thursday gave Atlanta a glimpse of what this can look like when Penix is rolling. If he keeps playing like that, the Falcons won’t have much appetite to look elsewhere.
