Michael Penix Jr. Is Changing What Falcons Fans Expect

With dynamic quarterback Michael Penix Jr. at the helm, the Atlanta Falcons' offense has been transformed, scoring 80 points in their last two games.

The Falcons looked like a different outfit Monday night, and their own locker room said the quiet part out loud: Michael Penix Jr. changes everything.

After Atlanta’s 45-24 win over the New Orleans Saints, safety Jessie Bates III pointed directly to the quarterback’s presence as the reason the offense has taken off.

"We just want to show the world who we can be," safety Jessie Bates III said, according to ESPN's Marc Raimondi. "The first two weeks were not up to our standards.

Obviously, when you got (Penix) back there dealing, it's a whole different team. So, we're just excited to continue to go with this."

That’s not just talk backed by one good night. The Falcons have put up 80 points over the last two weeks since Penix returned from a torn ACL sustained in November 2025. In the first two games, with third-string quarterback Cooper Rush under center, Atlanta managed only 16 points.

Penix left the game with a grin and the kind of postgame line that matched the mood.

"Obviously, we got the results we wanted. It went real good," Penix said postgame with a smile.

Atlanta’s offense has now stacked two straight blowout wins, both by more than 20 points, for the first time since Weeks 14-15 in 2016. Penix has been at the center of it, going 33-for-45 for 479 yards with two touchdowns and one interception this season.

The praise kept coming from inside the building. Running back Brian Robinson Jr. didn’t overcomplicate it when asked about the quarterback’s play.

"He's been phenomenal, man," running back Brian Robinson Jr. said, according to Raimondi. "It ain't really much other words I can say about the way he's been playing.

I appreciate his attitude, how he come in and just take the field, and he's focused and he's ready. He's not letting nothing that he's been through in his past get in the way of his goals and what he wants in the future."

Atlanta drafted Penix eighth overall in 2024, and his first stretch of starting work last season was uneven. He went 3-6 in nine starts, finishing with a 60.1% completion percentage, 1,982 passing yards, nine passing touchdowns and three interceptions. But right now, the Falcons are riding the version of the offense that arrives when Penix is in control, and his teammates clearly believe they’ve found something worth building on.

Falcons-Ravens Suddenly Feels Very Different After Lamar Jackson Update

What sounded like a short-term concern for Lamar Jackson has quickly turned into something much more uncertain for the Ravens. Baltimore head coach Jesse Minter initially downplayed the left ankle injury, indicating Jackson would not be expected to miss multiple games, but the latest word has changed the outlook around Sundays matchup with Atlanta and how the rest of the schedule might unfold.

Ian Rapoport reported that Jackson now has only an outside chance to play against the Falcons, with Tyler Huntley the likely starter if Baltimore chooses to hold him out. For Atlanta, that kind of shift matters because it changes the kind of offense the Falcons may be preparing for, and it also leaves open the possibility that Jackson could sit beyond this week, including in a possible game against the Browns. Falcons Could Catch Ravens In A Spot They Did Not Expect

The Week 5 matchup with Baltimore suddenly looks more intriguing for Atlanta than anyone expected when the schedule came out. The Ravens are dealing with uncertainty around Lamar Jacksons ankle, and that has the potential to change the shape of the game plan on the fly. For the Falcons, it adds another layer to a trip that already comes with plenty of intrigue, especially with the way their offense has been humming around Bijan Robinson and Michael Penix Jr.

Atlanta has leaned into a balanced approach lately, and that identity could matter even more if Baltimore is forced to adjust. The Falcons do not need this game to become a shootout to feel good about their chances, but they do need to keep doing the things that have made them effective on offense. If the Ravens are missing their biggest difference-maker under center, it is the kind of opening Atlanta has to be ready to press. [Read more 🡒]

Falcons Surge Just Made This NFL Ranking Look Ridiculous

ESPNs latest NFL power rankings gave the Falcons a 25th-place spot, a number that feels detached from what has played out under the lights over the last couple of weeks. Atlanta has strung together two straight primetime wins with strong offensive production, a run that has at least put some momentum behind a team that spent the early part of the season dealing with injuries and quarterback issues.

What makes the placement hard to square is not just the low ranking itself, but the company the Falcons were kept below after beating those opponents decisively. The panel behind the list is anonymous, which only sharpens the debate around how much weight should still be given to the early-season mess versus what the Falcons look like right now, and whether the latest vote says more about lingering reputation than current reality.
