Michael Penix Is Turning Into A Real Falcons Question Week 8

As Michael Penix Jr. rises in the quarterback rankings following a stellar performance, the Falcons' signal-caller faces his next test against a formidable Buccaneers defense.

Michael Penix Jr. is starting to look like the real thing in Atlanta, even if the latest quarterback rankings didn’t fully reward it.

The Falcons quarterback was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week after torching the San Francisco 49ers, and his play since coming back into the lineup in Week 3 has been hard to ignore. Over that stretch, Penix has thrown nine touchdown passes with only one interception.

His latest outing was his sharpest yet. Against a 49ers defense that has been among the league’s best, he put up three total scores and avoided turnovers.

Still, the bump in NFL.com’s weekly quarterback rankings was a modest one. Penix moved up just one spot to No. 12, landing between two former MVPs - one place behind Patrick Mahomes and one ahead of Matt Stafford.

NFL.com had this to say about him: "Michael Penix Jr. looks very comfortable and decisive in Kevin Stefanski’s offense, freely spreading the ball among his many talented targets at a rate I haven’t seen from him previously in his NFL career. Penix's contributions were especially important in a game in which Bijan Robinson fell short of breaking things open on the ground, and a reason to take the Falcons seriously going forward."

The small rise may not feel like much, especially after a performance like that, but it also reflects how far Penix has come. He wasn’t even appearing in most quarterback rankings before the season. That spot belonged to Tua Tagovailoa, who usually checked in around Nos. 30 to 32 among projected starters.

Tagovailoa never won the Falcons’ QB1 job, and once Penix got healthy, the job flipped quickly. Right now, it looks like Atlanta has found its starter, and he may not be giving that up anytime soon.

The next test comes against Todd Bowles and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Tampa Bay ranks 14th against the pass and second against the run, which could put even more on Penix’s shoulders if the Buccaneers are able to limit Bijan Robinson the way San Francisco did.

Falcons NFC South Push May Not Bring The Deadline Move Fans Want

The Falcons are sitting at 3-4 and still close enough to the NFC South race that the trade deadline has become a natural talking point, especially for a team that has shown it can hang around without needing a full reset. But the front offices recent history suggests patience is more likely than a splashy swing, with Ian Cunningham taking a measured approach since arriving in January and keeping the focus on smaller, more manageable deals.

For Atlanta fans hoping for a headline-grabbing addition, that is the part that tempers expectations. The Falcons may explore the market if the right fit appears, but this does not look like a team eager to chase the biggest names or pay a steep price just to make noise before the deadline. Falcons Suddenly Have A James Pearce Jr. Decision That Could Matter Fast

James Pearce Jr. is nearing a return to the Falcons after serving an eight-game suspension, with the rookie pass rusher set to finish that stretch after the upcoming game against the Buccaneers. Atlanta took him in the first round in 2025, and his absence has left the defense waiting on a player the team clearly expected to matter quickly.

Kevin Stefanski said Pearce has complied with everything required during the suspension, but the Falcons still have a decision to make once he is back in the building. The bigger question now is how much they trust him right away, especially with his legal situation still hanging over the story after the February incident involving a former partner and law enforcement. Drake London Is Making The Falcons Look Right For Betting Big

Drake London has quickly become the kind of player a front office can point to when it wants to justify a major investment. After Atlanta handed the wide receiver a four-year, $141 million extension in June 2026, the early returns have been hard to ignore, with London giving the Falcons the sort of steady production and big-play presence that can reshape how a passing game is viewed around the league.

His latest statement came against San Francisco, where he caught his first touchdown of the season on a 21-yard throw from Michael Penix Jr. The connection between the two has been one of the more encouraging developments for Atlanta through the first part of the year, and it is helping the Falcons look increasingly smart for betting big on London when they did.
