Kendal Daniels Opened Up About The Toughest Part Of His Return

After a dramatic recovery from a neck injury, Falcons rookie linebacker Kendal Daniels played a pivotal role in clinching a game-turning victory over the previously undefeated 49ers.

Kendal Daniels walked back onto the field with plenty to think about, and the Falcons rookie linebacker still ended up owning the biggest moments of Atlanta’s 29-20 win over the previously unbeaten San Francisco 49ers on Sunday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Just one week after a frightening neck injury against the Chicago Bears in Week 6, Daniels turned in a huge all-around effort in Atlanta’s first home win of the season. He led the team with 11 tackles, intercepted Brock Purdy and recovered a fumble as the Falcons handed the 49ers their first loss of the year.

The injury itself was as alarming as it gets. Daniels was carted off and taken to Grady Memorial Hospital after a knee-to-head collision against Chicago.

He stayed down for nearly eight minutes before medical staff immobilized him and moved him for evaluation. Tests later showed no structural damage or concussion.

Even after he returned to Atlanta’s facility under his own power, the pain lingered. Maason Smith said Daniels was in a lot of pain, and by Monday, Daniels reportedly had trouble turning his neck from side to side. Still, he got back to practice on Wednesday, finished the week, and was cleared to play against San Francisco.

The rookie admitted the incident was still in the back of his mind before the game.

“I wasn't scared, but I definitely thought about it,” he said. “I haven't been in full pads all week.

What if I'm not OK? But once I got my first tackle in pregame, I was good.”

Once the game got rolling, Daniels looked anything but tentative. Late in the fourth quarter, with Atlanta clinging to a 26-20 lead, he jumped a Purdy throw intended for Jordan Watkins, picked it off and returned it 29 yards. That turnover set up Nick Folk’s field goal and pushed the Falcons in front 29-20 with under two minutes left.

Then Daniels delivered again. After Jessie Bates III jarred the ball loose from George Kittle, Daniels was there to fall on it and shut down what was left of San Francisco’s comeback.

He also took on more responsibility with Divine Deablo out because of a forearm injury, wearing the green dot and relaying defensive calls in just his seventh career game.

Atlanta’s defense forced four turnovers overall, and Daniels was rewarded with a game ball after the win. Looking back on the stretch from injury scare to game-winning plays, he called it the craziest week of his life.

Falcons Rookie Kendal Daniels Made This 49ers Breakout Even More Remarkable

The Falcons Week 7 win over the 49ers had plenty of good moments, but rookie linebacker Kendal Daniels turned it into a coming-out party in a way Atlanta will remember. Daniels made his presence felt late, stepping into a starting role after recently working back from a neck injury and showing the kind of poise and confidence that can change a game in a hurry.

Daniels said he was grateful to his teammates for supporting him through the recovery process and for the trust the Falcons showed by drafting him and giving him a shot to start. For Atlanta, the performance was encouraging on its own, and even more so because it came from a rookie who had already shown he could bounce back from adversity and make a real impact when the pressure was highest. Michael Penix Just Answered A Huge Question Against San Francisco

Michael Penix walked into a tough matchup against San Francisco with plenty still to prove, and the Falcons left with something more valuable than just a win. Against an undefeated 49ers team, the quarterback showed he could handle the kind of stage and defensive look that usually tests a young passer, helping Atlanta come away with a result that will travel well as the season moves on.

What stood out was how Penix got there. Faced with a zone-heavy defense, he didnt force the issue or try to live exclusively off the deep ball, and that adjustment helped him stay efficient throughout the afternoon. For a Falcons offense still learning what it can be with him at the controls, it was the kind of performance that suggested there may be more than one way for him to beat a defense built to take away his favorite routes. Falcons Fans Finally Have A Real Reason To Believe Again

A lot has changed fast in Atlanta, and a fan base that has spent years searching for a clear direction finally has one. Michael Penix Jr. has settled in as the starter, the rookie class has brought instant help from players like Avieon Terrell, Kendal Daniels, Harold Perkins Jr. and Zachariah Branch, and the front office kept adding pieces around them with offseason trades for Maason Smith and Gervon Dexter Sr. plus veteran pickups along the defensive front.

The result is a roster that looks more complete than it has in a while, with the quarterback play giving the whole operation a different feel and the new defenders helping raise the floor on that side of the ball. ZaDarius Smith, in particular, has been a major part of that transition after arriving late in the offseason, and the broader question for Atlanta now is whether this early momentum can turn into something lasting once the schedule tightens and the real pressure starts to build.
