The New York Giants have given Marlon Davidson another shot.
The former Atlanta Falcons second-round pick reportedly signed with the Giants on Monday after working out for the team that day. He joined former Ohio State tight end Tyler Moore in the group of additions, and New York is bringing him in to help create competition in a defensive tackle room that is without Dexter Lawrence.
Davidson, now 28, was one of the players to take part in the Giants’ large tryout before training camp. He did enough to earn a contract, but his track record suggests the move is more about filling out the room than banking on a real breakout.
Atlanta took Davidson 47th overall in 2020, and the pick never came close to paying off. He spent three seasons with the Falcons, though he was only on the active roster for two of them because of an injury in 2022. In 19 games with one start, he totaled 29 tackles and one sack.
Since leaving Atlanta, Davidson has bounced around the league, with stops in Tennessee and Houston along with practice squad stints. The Giants are now his latest stop, and the fit makes some sense on paper. He previously played for New York defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson during his time in Tennessee.
Big Blue has already added to the position this offseason, signing D.J. Reader and Shelby Harris along with other rotational veterans to help replace “Sexy Dexy.” Even with that work done, the Giants still see room for more competition, and Davidson is getting a chance to fight for a roster spot.
He could wind up on the practice squad if the Giants like the idea of keeping him around while they sort through depth. Without this opportunity, his next move might have been outside the NFL, with the UFL or CFL as possible landing spots.
For the Falcons, Davidson remains one of the clearest draft misses of recent years. For the Giants, he’s a low-risk swing to see whether there’s anything left to unlock.
