Week 7 is here, and by this point in the 2026 NFL season, the league starts sorting itself out fast. With seven games on the books for most teams, the truth gets harder to hide.
Some clubs are still figuring things out. Others are already staring down a loss before kickoff.
That’s where this Week 7 slate gets interesting. There are a few matchups where the outcome feels all but decided, and one of them features a team that, frankly, has no business taking on the San Francisco 49ers right now.
You almost feel for whoever has to line up across from San Francisco at this stage. The 49ers are doing it while dealing with a ton of injuries, which makes their level of play even more impressive.
They did let the Washington Commanders hang around in Week 6, and that was at least a little concerning. But even with that, the 49ers still look like the best team in the sport.
Atlanta, meanwhile, looks much closer to the bad side of the line than the good side. That doesn’t mean there hasn’t been anything to like.
Michael Penix Jr. has given the Falcons encouraging play, and they’ve got a group of playmakers that can create some offense. Still, this feels like a team that is at least a solid year away from getting anywhere near the class San Francisco is in.
The Falcons should score some points. That much seems reasonable.
But when you stack up the rosters and the way both teams are playing, it’s hard to see Atlanta being the one to knock off the Niners here. San Francisco looks too sharp, too complete, and too hard to trust against.
The Falcons just don’t stand out enough to pull this one off in Week 7.

Falcons Offense Has One Frustrating Shift Fans Can't Ignore
After a promising start, the Falcons have suddenly dropped two straight, and the frustration around the offense is starting to feel familiar for a team trying to build something around Michael Penix Jr. Atlantas early success came with a run-first approach that kept the attack balanced and gave the rookie quarterback a steadier rhythm, but the recent slide has invited sharper scrutiny of how the offense is being called and whether it has drifted from what was working.
Tommy Rees is now at the center of that conversation, with his play-calling drawing criticism for moving away from the scheme that helped the Falcons find their footing. The bigger concern for Atlanta is not just that the offense has cooled, but that key pieces are not being used in a way that maximizes what they do best, leaving fans wondering why a unit that looked so efficient not long ago has become so hard to trust. Falcons Pass Defense May Force A Deadline Move They Can't Dodge
After the loss to the Bears, the Falcons pass defense is looking like the sort of problem that can force a front office into action before the deadline. Atlanta expects help back soon with A.J. Terrell and James Pearce Jr. on the way from injury, but the secondary has still been vulnerable enough to keep the conversation centered on whether more help is needed, and how aggressive the team wants to be in fixing it.
One name worth watching is a corner with a short-term deal in Philadelphia, where the Eagles season has taken a turn and the franchise may be more willing to listen than it was a few weeks ago. For the Falcons, the question is whether the combination of reinforcements already coming back and the urgency created by recent breakdowns is enough to push them into a move they might otherwise try to avoid. Falcons Suddenly Have A Major 49ers Injury Watch This Week
The Falcons Week 7 preparation has picked up an unexpected layer of intrigue because of whats happening on the other sideline. San Francisco wide receiver Mike Evans has been dealing with Achilles tendonitis after not finishing the 49ers recent win over Washington, and his status has quickly become one of the bigger health notes to track before Atlanta gets to work on that matchup.
Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch said Evans availability for the game against the Falcons is still to be determined, with the team planning to monitor him over the next few days. For Atlanta, that makes this one worth watching closely, since Evans has been a key part of the 49ers passing game this season and his presence or absence could change how San Francisco approaches the matchup.
