Falcons Win Put Dre Greenlaw Right Back In The NFL Spotlight

After returning from a suspension, Dre Greenlaw's controversial conduct on the field has resulted in another costly fine, raising questions about his future in the NFL.

The NFL has again hit Dre Greenlaw in the wallet after the San Francisco 49ers linebacker added another costly moment to a season already packed with discipline.

Greenlaw was fined $12,537 for unnecessary roughness after cameras showed him punching Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Drake London in the helmet during San Francisco’s 29-20 loss. London had the ball and was trying to power through a tackle when Greenlaw’s blow stopped him cold and sent him to a concussion test.

Greenlaw said he was trying to punch the ball loose, but the punch missed its mark and landed on London’s helmet instead. Officials did not throw a flag on the play, but replay showed the contact clearly, and the league moved in before the 49ers’ Week 8 game against Las Vegas.

It was the latest chapter in a rough run for Greenlaw, who had just returned from a one-game suspension for a vicious Week 5 headbutt on Seattle Seahawks linebacker Ernest Jones IV. That hit left Jones bleeding after Greenlaw drove his helmet into Jones’ bare head, and Greenlaw was tossed immediately.

He appealed that suspension, but the league quickly rejected it. He sat out the Week 6 win over the Washington Commanders and lost his $200,000 game check in the process.

Greenlaw’s history with the league office stretches well beyond this season. He has been ejected three times in his eight-year NFL career, all of them coming in the last four years.

In 2023, he had a sideline altercation with Philadelphia’s head of security Dom DiSandro. He was also disqualified in 2022 for a helmet-to-helmet hit on the Chargers’ Justin Herbert.

Last season, Greenlaw was suspended for one game in Denver after berating an official following a win over the New York Giants. He was also fined $11,941 for taunting the Broncos’ sideline in a win on October 4.

His latest trouble started against Seattle on October 11 in the second quarter, when Sam Darnold scrambled out of bounds and Greenlaw hit him late, drawing a personal foul. Seahawks defenders immediately confronted him, and Greenlaw answered by head-butting Jones. Jones was bleeding after the collision, and Greenlaw was ejected.

Falcons Have A Few Big Contract Decisions Coming Into Focus

The Falcons have spent the past stretch locking up important pieces of their core, with long-term extensions already in place for players such as Bijan Robinson and Drake London. That kind of business has helped stabilize the roster, but it also shifts attention to the next wave of decisions, especially with several players now lining up to reach free agency after the 2027 season.

Among the names coming into focus are a pair of defenders who have become central to Atlantas plans, along with a handful of other offensive and defensive players who could factor into the clubs long-range cap picture. The list gives the Falcons a clearer sense of what is ahead, even if the most pressing questions are still waiting to be answered. [Read more 🡒]

Falcons Rookie Faces Heartbreaking Reality Before His NFL Debut

Anterio Thompsons path to the NFL has taken a devastating turn before it ever had a chance to begin. The Falcons rookie defensive tackle, a sixth-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, had been on the non-football injury list since the start of training camp, and his status had already raised questions about when he might finally get on the field.

Those questions were answered in heartbreaking fashion when Thompson shared on social media that a genetic mutation affecting his spinal cord will keep him from playing football again. For Atlanta, it is a cruel end to a player the team had just added to its future, and for Thompson it closes the door on a professional debut that never arrived. [Read more 🡒]

Falcons Suddenly Have A Tyler Allgeier Problem They Created

The Falcons running back picture got a lot murkier after they chose Brian Robinson Jr. over Tyler Allgeier and watched Allgeier head to Arizona on a new deal. Atlanta made its bet on Robinson as the more immediate fit, but the move also left the team thinner than it wanted to be behind its lead back, especially with Allgeier now out of the building and no easy replacement on hand.

Allgeier has not exactly forced the issue in Arizona, either, as his role has been reduced and his production has dipped. Still, with Robinson sidelined, the Falcons suddenly have to live with the consequences of their own roster decision, and that has naturally led to some speculation about whether they would revisit a familiar name if the injury situation drags on. No move has been made yet, but the possibility alone says plenty about how quickly the depth chart can shift. [Read more 🡒]
