Caleb Williams put the Bears in a tricky spot Thursday when he confirmed the injury behind his Week 6 status remains more serious than a routine setback.
After Chicago listed its quarterback as a full participant in practice on both Wednesday and Thursday, the signs initially pointed in a promising direction for his return against the Atlanta Falcons. But Williams offered a more complicated picture during his press conference, saying he did tear his hamstring and still has work to do before he can get back on the field.
“Caleb Williams said he had a hamstring tear, but he declined to say what grade,” Sam Hammond of The Chicago Tribune reported.
That detail matters because it confirms Williams dealt with a hamstring tear, even if the Bears quarterback did not go into the severity. His full practice status suggests progress, but it does not settle the question of whether he will play this weekend.
Williams also said he “doesn't know if he's playing yet this weekend against the Atlanta Falcons.”
The final hurdle, he explained, is not just practice reps. “Have to go through a bunch of medical protocols.”
So while the Bears have reason to be encouraged by Williams getting through full practices this week, his Week 6 availability is still unresolved. If he does return, he would have missed three full weeks. Chicago went 2-1 in that stretch, with Case Keenum and Tyson Bagent each picking up a win.
For now, the quarterback’s status is still up in the air. The practice reports looked upbeat, but Williams made it clear that he still has to clear the next round of tests before the Bears can put him back under center against Atlanta.

Falcons Fans Aren't Ready For Grady Jarrett's Atlanta Return
Few players in recent Falcons memory are tied to Atlanta quite like Grady Jarrett, and Week 6 will bring an unusual scene when the longtime defensive tackle steps back into Mercedes-Benz Stadium wearing a different uniform. After spending his first 10 NFL seasons with the Falcons, Jarrett now lines up for the Chicago Bears, making this one of those returns that feels bigger than the game itself for a fan base that watched him become a fixture in the middle of the defense.
It is not just the emotion that makes the matchup interesting, either. Jarrett has started all five games for Chicago and already has nine pressures this season, so Atlantas offensive line will have to account for a familiar problem in a very unfamiliar setting. For Falcons fans, the reunion will carry plenty of history, but the football part of it may matter just as much once the ball is snapped. [Read more 🡒]
Falcons QB Doubts Just Made Michael Penix Jr. Look Even Bigger
Michael Penix Jr. has suddenly looked like the Falcons clearest answer at quarterback as the team starts sorting through its long-term plan for 2026. After Tua Tagovailoas rough showing in Week 5, Atlantas preference for Penix has only seemed to harden, especially with the belief that his skill set fits the offense better even as his injury history remains part of the conversation.
Tagovailoas future with the Falcons now feels more unsettled than it did a few weeks ago, and that matters because this is the kind of decision that can shape the direction of the entire offense. Penix still has to stay healthy and keep building on the trust he has earned, but for now he looks like the quarterback Atlanta is leaning on while the rest of the picture around him comes into focus. Falcons Early Identity Is Taking Shape But One Trend Looks Fragile
After an 0-2 start, the Falcons have steadied themselves enough to make the early part of the season feel less like a stumble and more like the first outline of a team taking shape. A pair of wins helped reset the tone, and even the overtime loss to Baltimore left Atlanta at 2-3 and still in the thick of the NFC South race. The roster depth at the skill spots has been a real separator, with the running backs and wide receivers giving the offense more ways to function week to week.
The more delicate part of the picture is what happens when Atlanta runs into a sturdier rushing attack. The front had been holding up well enough to give the defense a strong early foundation, but the kind of test Baltimore presented raised the question of how long that edge can last once the competition tightens. For a Falcons team trying to build an identity as the season settles in, the answer to that may matter just as much as the record. [Read more 🡒]
