After a summer-long competition, the Atlanta Falcons have settled on Tua Tagovailoa as their Week 1 starting quarterback. The team made the call official on Monday, six days before Atlanta heads to Pittsburgh to face the Steelers.
Tagovailoa won the job over Michael Penix Jr., though the battle didn’t truly heat up until two weeks ago, when Penix was cleared for full team drills. Penix had torn his ACL in Week 11 and did not take part in the preseason, even after being cleared before the Falcons’ final matchup with the Dolphins.
That left Tagovailoa to handle the first-team reps, and his summer was uneven. He followed a rough outing against the Broncos by going 7-of-8 for 95 yards against his former team. That game opened with a touchdown drive, but it also included a lost fumble after a botched snap with backup center Corey Levin.
The turnover was Tagovailoa’s second of the preseason, and ball security became a talking point throughout camp. He dropped a ball during practice at Lanier High School and lost another during joint practices with the Colts.
Atlanta signed Tagovailoa earlier this offseason to a one-year, $1.2 million contract after he spent the previous six seasons elsewhere. His career has had plenty of peaks and valleys, but the veteran has still led the NFL in passer rating in 2022, passing yards in 2023 and completion percentage in 2024. Last season, he was released for an NFL-record $99.2 million in dead money after throwing 15 interceptions and dealing with more injuries.
Penix’s role this summer was limited. He only worked in 7-on-7 drills during camp while Tagovailoa handled most of the team periods. The starter has made just 12 starts across his first two professional seasons, going 4-8 while completing 59.6% of his passes for 2,757 yards, 12 touchdowns and six interceptions.
Even with the decision now in place, there remains a reasonable chance both quarterbacks could start games for Atlanta this season.
The quarterback room is deeper than usual, too. General manager Ian Cunningham decided to keep four quarterbacks on the 53-man roster, with Cooper Rush and undrafted rookie Jack Strand joining Tagovailoa and Penix. Rush and Strand will serve in reserve roles after strong preseason showings, aside from Rush’s shaky first week.
Atlanta will keep building toward Sunday’s opener against Pittsburgh, with kickoff set for 1:00 in Pittsburgh.
