Falcons Suddenly Need Jared Ivey To Prove He Belongs

Jared Ivey's unexpected rise in the Atlanta Falcons' lineup highlights the team's strategic focus on resilience and opportunity as they gear up for future challenges.

Jared Ivey didn’t get many chances to make a mark early in the season, but when the Falcons needed help on the edge, he stepped into the spotlight and made it count.

Atlanta had already been dealing with a shifting pass-rush picture. Yasir Abdullah was out, and Za'Darius Smith was sidelined with a concussion.

That opened the door for Ivey in the loss to the Ravens, after he had barely seen the field through the first four weeks. His usage had been all over the place: 27% of snaps in Week 1 against the Steelers, then no snaps at all in Week 2, only six in Week 3, and just 6% in Week 4.

With Abdullah later placed on IR, the Falcons were suddenly asking Ivey to be more than a spare part next to Cameron Thomas and Samson Ebukam.

That kind of opportunity matters even more for a player with Ivey’s road to the league. The Georgia native grew up at North Gwinnett High School in Suwanee, where he played basketball and football.

He drew plenty of attention with his size and power, and even had multiple Division I basketball offers, but he chose football full time. A four-star defensive end according to 247Sports, he committed to Georgia Tech in 2020.

He spent two seasons with the Yellow Jackets, piling up 40 tackles and 1.5 sacks before transferring to Ole Miss in 2022. That move unlocked a much bigger version of his game.

Ivey went on to earn First-Team All-SEC and Peach Bowl Defensive MVP honors in 2023, then Third-Team All-SEC recognition in 2024. Over his college career, he played 58 games, started 43, and finished with 165 total tackles, 33.5 tackles for loss, 17.5 sacks, five fumble recoveries, four forced fumbles and one defensive touchdown.

The NFL path was slower to open up. He went undrafted in 2025, then landed with the Seattle Seahawks shortly after.

Ivey appeared in only two games that season, but he also got a front-row seat to winning. He was part of a Seahawks team that went on to win the Super Bowl.

Atlanta’s edge depth got thinner after James Pearce Jr. received an eight-game suspension and Jalon Walker’s ACL tear ended his season early. After roster cuts, Ian Cunningham made the call and the Falcons claimed Ivey off waivers, signing the 24-year-old to the active roster and bringing him back to the city where he grew up.

Ivey also brings more than just size and athleticism. He’s described as a community-minded player who gives back to the people who supported him.

According to The Commercial Dispatch, "He knows he's where he's at because people poured into him. And he has every intention of pouring it back into other people."

His return home drew support from family and people in his community, and now Atlanta was waiting to see if the fit would hold on the field.

Week 5 gave the Falcons a clear answer. Ivey matched his career high with 18 snaps, recorded his first sack, added two more tackles, and came close to finishing off a couple screen plays, though Derrick Henry wasn’t going down easily. He also posted an 82.7 PFF grade, the highest on Atlanta’s defense that week.

For a player who had barely been in the rotation, that’s a real step forward. Ivey is building a case for a bigger role as a rotational edge in Atlanta, and Week 6 against the Chicago Bears gives him another chance to keep it going.

Lamar Jackson Update Changes How Falcons Fans May View Week 5

Lamar Jacksons absence in Baltimores Week 5 win over the Falcons helped shape the way that game was viewed on both sidelines, especially with the Ravens forced to go without their quarterback after he hurt his ankle in Week 4. Atlanta could at least take some comfort in knowing it didnt have to deal with Jackson on Sunday, even if the Falcons still had plenty to sort through from their own performance.

Now the situation has turned quickly toward Week 6, where Jacksons availability could change the tone of the Ravens next matchup and, by extension, how the Falcons loss or result in Baltimore gets judged in the coming days. Baltimores first injury report of the week arrives Wednesday, and that will be the first real checkpoint for anyone trying to figure out whether Jackson is trending back toward the field. Michael Penix Jr. Suddenly Puts Falcons Week 6 Outlook On Edge

Michael Penix Jr. gave the Falcons a little more than they bargained for in Week 5, leaving Sundays game against the Ravens with a rib injury. The early sense around the team is still relatively upbeat, though, and Atlanta is working under the belief that the quarterbacks issue should not linger long enough to create a bigger problem for the offense heading into Week 6.

Still, this weeks outlook has plenty riding on Penixs status, especially with the Bears on deck and the betting market already nudging in Atlantas direction. The real checkpoint comes Wednesday, when the Falcons release their first practice report and get a clearer read on whether Penix is trending toward playing or if the situation remains in flux. Falcons Overtime Meltdown Looks Even Worse After Ravens Revelation

The Falcons overtime loss in Baltimore already looked like a brutal break in the standings, but the latest detail to surface made it sting a little more. On The Marlon Humphrey Show, Humphrey revealed that Ravens safety Kyle Hamilton had a hunch the moment Atlanta turned to backup quarterback Tua Tagovailoa in overtime, setting the stage for a sequence that now feels even more deflating for the Falcons.

Atlantas first possession of overtime ended the way the Ravens hoped it would, with Hamilton coming up with the interception that sealed Baltimores 30-23 victory. For the Falcons, its another reminder of how quickly an extra period can turn, and for the Ravens, it only adds to the sense that their secondary had read the situation before the ball was even snapped.
