The Falcons got a cleaner look on Day 2 against the Colts, and the difference showed in the red zone. After a quieter offensive session on Wednesday, Atlanta put together more productive stretches Thursday as the second and final joint practice wrapped up ahead of Saturday’s preseason game.
Tua Tagovailoa’s work stood out as a clear step forward. He finished 7-of-14 in 11-on-11 periods and threw three touchdowns during red-zone work, a stronger finish than the one he delivered a day earlier.
The completion rate wasn’t eye-popping, but the touchdowns mattered most once the field shrank. Atlanta still couldn’t close the practice on a high note, though, as the offense ended the two-minute drill with four straight incompletions.
Tagovailoa’s Thursday showing looked better than Wednesday’s overall line, when he went 8-of-13 in 11-on-11 work and 3-of-3 in 7-on-7. Even then, much of his production came underneath, including several swing passes to Bijan Robinson, with downfield chances limited.
Michael Penix Jr. remained a major subplot. The second-year quarterback met with a doctor Thursday about possibly being cleared for 11-on-11 work, and Penix said he won’t push for that decision himself.
He’ll leave it to the medical staff. For now, he’s still being handled carefully as he moves back toward full football activity.
Penix did take part in 7-on-7, but the session was a rougher one than Wednesday. He completed just 2-of-5 passes and threw an interception after going 6-of-9 in Wednesday’s 7-on-7 period. If he does get the green light, the rest of camp could give him valuable chances to get back into live action and keep pushing in the battle for the starting job.
Atlanta also kept leaning on its young linebackers. Kendal Daniels and Harold Perkins Jr. handled all of the first-team snaps during the two-minute drill, a meaningful assignment in a key situation.
Daniels has also been wearing the green dot at times during camp, which puts him in charge of relaying the defensive calls. That kind of responsibility says plenty about how the Falcons are viewing him.
Perkins, meanwhile, continues to get chances as the team sorts out how its younger linebackers fit into the defense.
There were a few other roster-watch notes worth tracking. Jack Strand still didn’t get team work, though he’s expected to play half of Saturday’s preseason game.
Chris Blair picked up most of Jahan Dotson’s first-team reps in red-zone work, another opportunity to strengthen his roster case. LaCale London was back on the field, Jessie Bates III remained out of team work, and Tyler Goodson left practice after a blocking collision.
With the joint work done, Atlanta now turns fully to Saturday.
