Falcons Suddenly Have A Tua Tagovailoa Decision Fans Didnt Expect

In the midst of quarterback turmoil for the Ravens, the Falcons may seize the opportunity to trade Tua Tagovailoa and shift gears for their season.

The Falcons are coming off a brutal 16-0 loss to the Bucs, and Michael Penix Jr.’s four-interception day only made the mess look worse. Atlanta looked nothing like a team that had recently seemed to have a real shot at the NFC South, and while the performance raised plenty of questions, it did not change the team’s plan at quarterback. Penix is staying in the job, even with Tua Tagovailoa and Andy Dalton sitting behind him.

That’s where the trade deadline starts to matter. At 3-5, Atlanta looks more like a seller than a buyer, and Tagovailoa suddenly stands out as a name worth moving if he isn’t going to see the field this season. The Falcons brought Dalton in partly because they didn’t have much faith in Tua as a backup for Penix, and the idea here is simple: if there’s a chance to turn him into a Day 3 pick, why not take it?

Baltimore is the team that makes this conversation real. The Ravens are in a full-blown emergency under center after Lamar Jackson needed thumb surgery and is headed to IR, with reports saying the injury could even end his season. As if that weren’t enough, Tyler Huntley also went down with a turf toe injury in the loss to the Bills.

That leaves the Ravens with undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano as the only quarterback on the active roster, which makes a move before next week’s deadline feel inevitable. In that kind of spot, Tagovailoa becomes one of the more appealing options they could land at a discount.

He’s not being framed as a savior, just a more reliable stopgap than what Baltimore has now. The Falcons have already been rumored to be shopping him, and with Dalton now available to back up Penix, Atlanta has less reason to hold onto Tua if there’s a deal to be made.

There’s also a front-office connection that makes this worth watching. Ian Cunningham and Eric DeCosta have history, since Cunningham worked under DeCosta in Baltimore from 2008-2016. That alone doesn’t force a trade, but it does make the fit easier to imagine.

For Atlanta, the bigger point is that Tagovailoa no longer has a clear path to meaningful snaps. Penix is expected to remain the starter through the rest of the season, and the Falcons aren’t planning to bring Tua back this offseason. With a tradeable contract and a Ravens team desperate for help, this is the kind of move that makes sense for both sides.

Falcons Head To Madrid With New Concerns And A Possible Boost

The Falcons are heading into their trip to Madrid still trying to shake off a strange 16-0 loss to Tampa Bay, one that stood out even by the standards of an off day. Atlanta did not allow a completed pass and still came away empty, a reminder that the defense did enough in one area but the offense never found a way to turn the game into anything manageable.

Kevin Stefanski said the injury picture is not getting cleaner before the matchup with Cincinnati, with Samson Ebukam and Zachariah Branch both unavailable because of hamstring issues. There is at least one potential lift on the horizon, though, as James Pearce Jr. is back in the conversation after completing an eight-game suspension, giving Atlanta a possible reinforcement as it tries to steady itself on an international stage. Falcons Just Got Outplayed In The Exact Way They Wanted To Win

Rainy conditions in Week 8 turned into a ground-game test, and it was Tampa Bay that controlled it. The Buccaneers leaned hard on the run and came away with a 16-0 win, while Atlanta never found the same kind of rhythm on the ground despite having Bijan Robinson in the backfield. It was the sort of game the Falcons usually want to make their own, only this time they were the ones getting pushed around in it.

The matchup carried a little extra edge because Zac Robinson was on the other sideline as Tampa Bays offensive coordinator, facing Atlanta for the first time since leaving. Instead of the Falcons dictating terms with their rushing attack, the Buccaneers were the more effective and more committed team in that phase, which only sharpened the frustration for Atlanta. For a club built to lean on the run, getting outplayed there is the kind of result that lingers. [Read more 🡒]

Falcons Just Got A Huge Pass Rush Boost At The Right Time

The Falcons got a timely lift for a pass rush that could use it, reinstating edge rusher James Pearce Jr. and making him eligible to rejoin the mix for their Week 9 matchup against the Bengals. Pearce led Atlanta in sacks last season, and his return gives the defense a proven edge presence at a point in the schedule when pressure off the corner can change the tone of a game.

To clear the way, Atlanta moved on from defensive lineman Jared Ivey and defensive end Drake Jackson, a reminder that roster churn is part of the cost of getting healthier. The bigger question now is how quickly Pearce can slide back into the rotation and whether the Falcons can turn that added pressure into the kind of disruption they have been looking for all season.
