Falcons Suddenly Have A Michael Penix Problem They Cant Ignore

In a shocking performance, the Falcons stumble against the Buccaneers, leaving fans and analysts perplexed by their inconsistency.

The Falcons walked into Tampa Bay with a chance to grab control of the NFC South, and instead left with one of the ugliest losses of their season. After last week’s statement win over the San Francisco 49ers, Atlanta got buried by the Bucs in a 16-0 shutout, a game that turned messy fast in the rain and never really got better for the Dirty Birds.

Michael Penix Jr. had the kind of day quarterbacks want to erase immediately. The Florida native was making his first career start in Tampa Bay with 30-plus family and friends in the stands at Raymond James Stadium, but he delivered the worst start of his NFL career.

Penix threw four interceptions, with three coming in the first half alone. He also could have been picked off a fifth time if Jahan Dotson hadn’t saved him from it, and he missed Kyle Pitts on what would have been a long touchdown.

For all the frustration, though, this wasn’t all on the rookie. The Bucs’ defense was legitimate, and the weather made everything harder.

Even with Penix struggling, Atlanta’s defense gave the team a chance early. The problem was the offense kept putting it in bad spots, starting with the opening-drive missed field goal and then the turnovers that followed.

Still, the Falcons managed to hold Tampa Bay to field goals on three of its first four drives, and they also came up with a red-zone peanut-punch to deny a touchdown. But once the game script tilted, the Bucs leaned on the ground game and took over.

Tampa Bay ran the ball more than 50 times for 300 yards, and Baker Mayfield didn’t complete a pass in his “revenge game” against Kevin Stefanski. The Bucs became the first team to win a game with no completions since 1974.

Jessie Bates was one of the few bright spots for Atlanta. For the second straight week, he forced a fumble with a peanut punch, this time stopping Bucky Irving at the goal line after a lateral from Mayfield.

The ball went out of the back of the end zone for a touchback, and without that play the Falcons’ deficit would have been even worse. Bates has been making impact plays all over the field lately, and with him in a contract year, his value keeps climbing.

Nick Folk’s rough day also added to Atlanta’s misery. The Falcons signed him to a three-year deal in free agency to solve their kicking issues, but his 53-yard miss on the opening drive was a brutal one.

Atlanta then passed up field-goal chances on its next two trips into scoring range, throwing a pick on one and failing to convert on the other. Folk has now missed three of his four attempts from 50-plus yards this season, and his range is clearly a problem.

What stands out most about this Falcons team is how impossible it is to pin down. One week they beat the 6-0 49ers, and the next they get blanked by a 2-5 Bucs team. That kind of swing makes it hard to trust what Atlanta will look like on any given Sunday, and after a prime chance to seize the division slipped away, that inconsistency is the story that keeps hanging over them.

Falcons Injury Update Puts Focus On James Pearce At Last

The Falcons settled into Madrid on Wednesday and got their first walkthrough of Week 9 against the Bengals, with the trip carrying a little extra attention because of the injury report. James Pearce Jr. finally took part in a full practice for the first time this season after serving his suspension, a notable step for a defense that has been waiting to see what the edge rusher can add once he is cleared for game action.

Atlanta also had a few moving parts elsewhere on the report, with Zachariah Branch ruled out because of a hamstring injury and several others limited. For a team trying to keep the week clean in an unusual setting, the bigger question now is how quickly Pearce can slide into the mix and what kind of role he can handle once the Falcons get to game day. Falcons Plan To Protect Michael Penix Jr. Is Starting To Show

The Falcons offseason blueprint is starting to take shape around one clear priority: making life easier for Michael Penix Jr. Sports Illustrateds latest mock draft has Atlanta looking hard at the offensive line, a move that fits the teams broader effort to fortify protection for its young quarterback while also keeping an eye on looming free-agent decisions and the long-term health of the front five.

There is also a bigger roster-planning element to the approach, with the Falcons expected to have significant salary cap space available in 2027 to keep improving the roster. For now, though, the direction is obvious enough. Atlanta appears intent on building stability up front first, and the way it handles that spot could shape not just Penixs development, but the next phase of the offense as a whole. [Read more 🡒]

Jahan Dotson Is Giving Falcons Fans Real Hope After Rough Loss

Jahan Dotson has quickly become one of the more encouraging pieces in Atlantas offense since signing his two-year deal, giving the Falcons a legitimate deep threat to pair with the rest of their skill talent. Through eight weeks, he has been one of the leagues most explosive receivers on a per-catch basis, and his latest outing showed why the team believes he can stretch defenses in ways that change how opponents have to play them.

Even in a Week 8 loss, Dotson turned in his best receiving day in nearly three years, a reminder that the Falcons may have found a useful answer on the outside after moving on from other options at the position. For a team still trying to find more consistency, his ability to threaten downfield has offered a real bright spot, and it has only added to the sense that Atlantas passing game may have another layer it can lean on as the season moves forward.
