Tua Tagovailoa’s shot to hold onto the Atlanta Falcons’ starting job has already turned into a strange waiting game.
When Atlanta brought him in on a one-year deal in March 2026, the move was supposed to give Tagovailoa a clean reset after six seasons with the Miami Dolphins. Miami cut him loose after a rough stretch and a difficult 2025 season, and the Falcons gave him a veteran-minimum contract worth $1.3 million.
At the time, it looked like a fresh opportunity. It may also be his last real chance to show he can still be a starting quarterback.
The setup in Atlanta made the situation even more unusual. Tagovailoa arrived as the expected starter while Michael Penix Jr. recovered from injury, and the Falcons suddenly had two left-handed quarterbacks on the roster.
But that plan has not held up for long. Training camp and preseason action have changed the picture quickly, and now the job is essentially sitting there for Penix when he returns.
Ian Rapoport noted that Tagovailoa’s work has made the original plan nearly impossible to follow. His first preseason outing against Denver did not help matters, either, as the limited production offered little to build on.
That leaves Tagovailoa heading into this week’s preseason game with everything on the line. He needs to show he is healthy, cleaner with the ball, and sharp enough to convince the coaches he deserves to stay in the role. Time is not on his side, with the regular season approaching fast.
The pressure is real because the 2025 numbers did not inspire much confidence. Tagovailoa played 14 games and finished with 2,660 passing yards, 20 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions.
