According to the AJC’s Daniel Flick, the undrafted rookie quarterback has made Atlanta’s initial 53-man roster out of camp, a development that came after Strand spent most of the summer behind Cooper Rush on the depth chart. Still, the Falcons apparently decided they couldn’t afford to risk exposing him to waivers.
Strand’s rise was one of the biggest stories of Atlanta’s preseason. He was the breakout name from the Falcons’ three exhibition games and built a real following with fans who wanted to see him stick as QB3 over Rush. Now, he’s done enough to survive cutdown day.

For a player who came in as an undrafted rookie, this is a remarkable outcome. Strand’s path stands out even more because he was a D2 quarterback, and that kind of success story is rare. Even FCS quarterbacks have a limited track record of making this kind of leap, so what Strand pulled off this summer is unusual.
His background only adds to the intrigue. Strand, a Minnesota State-Morehead product, majored in engineering physics and had been preparing to work for NASA. He also turned down major NIL compensation to leave the Dragons for a chance at a possible P4 team.
With Strand locked in, the Falcons’ quarterback situation has become clearer in at least one way: Rush is not being released, and Atlanta is expected to carry four quarterbacks in a Kevin Stefanski classic. That had been the likely direction anyway, especially with the Tua Tagovailoa trade chatter never amounting to anything.
Strand could open the year as QB4, with a path to QB3 if he keeps developing. From there, he could even become a backup if one of Tua or Michael Penix Jr. were to get hurt.
