Kevin Stefanski’s first two weeks with the Atlanta Falcons have been a mess, but not all of it lands on him.
The bigger problem has been the quarterback room, and that issue has pushed the Falcons into damage-control mode almost immediately. After the Raheem Morris debacle, Atlanta went looking for stability at head coach. Instead, the early returns have been defined by chaos under center - first with Cooper Rush, then with undrafted rookie Jack Strand, while Michael Penix Jr. and Tua Tagovailoa were hurt.
That’s the context Stefanski has been dealing with, and it matters. He didn’t plan for Tagovailoa to get hurt in practice two days before the opener, and he certainly didn’t want to be forced into starting Rush without any first-team practice reps.
He also didn’t want to spend the first two games leaning on an emergency quarterback. No team is winning games with Rush starting, but Penix is a different story.
Still, Stefanski isn’t getting a full pass. The way he handled the quarterback situation has left plenty to criticize, even if the sample size is tiny.
As a supposed "QB guru" , the two-time Coach of the Year deserves some flack for waiting until the third quarter to replace Cooper Rush with Jack Strand when the game was already out of hand. With the starters already out and the offensive line struggling, Strand was put in a bad spot.
There’s also the roster construction piece. The Falcons didn’t bring in a higher-quality QB3, and that decision is part of why they’ve been stuck in survival mode.
Rush is a career journeyman, but someone like Dillon Gabriel would've made more sense given the Stefanski ties. Instead, the Dirty Birds have been too conservative in how they’ve handled the QB room when they needed a spark.
At the same time, it’s hard to judge Stefanski’s entire run on two games that have been shaped by circumstances he couldn’t fully control. The modern NFL doesn’t offer much sympathy, but it does force teams to play the hand they’re dealt. That’s where Atlanta is right now, even if the cards have been brutal.
The Falcons are 0-2, and yes, the playoff drought could stretch to a ninth straight year. But the season is still young, with 15 games left to show something better. Penix is back in the starting lineup now, and that gives Atlanta a real chance to finally evaluate this new staff instead of just trying to survive the latest quarterback crisis.
A strong showing from No. 9 in a TNF upset over the Packers in his first start back would go a long way toward calming things down. For now, though, the Stefanski era has begun with more blame than anyone wanted and a little grace that he’s probably earned too.
