Michael Penix’s recovery has changed the shape of the Falcons’ quarterback race, and for now it leaves Tua Tagovailoa sitting in the pole position.
That’s the reality after a string of updates that have made Penix’s timeline harder to pin down. Back in January, Penix reportedly said he expected to be ready by April, which would have put him on track for Falcons minicamp.
That never happened. Even so, Stefanski downplayed concern in late May, telling reporters the 2024 NFL Draft’s No. 8 overall pick was “exactly where he needs to be.”
The optimism didn’t last long. In June, ESPN Falcons reporter Marc Raimondi relayed another Penix update after the quarterback was asked about being available for training camp and answered, “That's the expectation.” Then came a more troubling note in mid-July, when Raimondi wrote, “No one knows for sure” when Penix would be fully healthy.
“And until that happens,” Raimondi wrote, “Tua Tagovailoa has to be considered the starter.”
That puts a spotlight on the biggest job on the Falcons’ summer checklist. Training camp and the preseason are all about settling the quarterback spot, and Atlanta has enough talent around that position to make the answer matter immediately. Bijan Robinson, Drake London and Kyle Pitts give the offense real firepower, and the Falcons, who finished in a three-way tie for first in the NFC South last season, could be in position to chase their first division title since 2016 if the quarterback play is simply competent.
But the situation is far from clean. Tagovailoa was jettisoned by the Miami Dolphins during the offseason, and his 2024 season was uneven: 190 passing yards per game, 20 touchdowns and a career-high 15 interceptions. Penix has been safer with the ball, throwing three picks in 2025, but his career completion rate sits at 59.6 percent.
In a perfect world, Atlanta would have a true competition between two former top-10 picks and let the best man win. Penix’s recovery has taken that option off the table for now. That matters even more because the Falcons are installing Stefanski’s offense, and every missed rep limits the 2023 Heisman finalist’s chance to build command of the system once he’s cleared.
So as camp opens, the job belongs to Tagovailoa. Penix has a chance to change that, but the window may not be wide. At the moment, he may be fortunate just to get one.
