Aaron Rodgers is back at the center of the NFL conversation, and the Falcons are the first team in line to deal with it.
The Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback is set to begin what the source describes as his 22nd and final NFL season on Sunday, Sept. 13, when Atlanta visits Acrisure Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m., and the game will air on FOX.
Atlanta head coach Kevin Stefanski isn’t treating Rodgers like a fading name on the schedule. Quite the opposite.
When asked about the 42-year-old on Wednesday, Sept. 9, Stefanski made it clear he still sees the same elite traits that have defined Rodgers’ career.
“He still can make every single throw. He’s got as good an arm as anybody I’ve ever seen live.
It’s unbelievable,” he described the 42-year-old to reporters on Wednesday, Sept. 9.
“He can beat you with his mind. He’s just a terrific player.”
That respect didn’t come out of nowhere. Stefanski spent 14 seasons climbing the coaching ladder with the Minnesota Vikings while Rodgers was tormenting NFC North defenses with the Green Bay Packers. During that stretch, Rodgers delivered some of his biggest games against Minnesota, including multiple outings with four touchdown passes and more than 300 passing yards.
Stefanski said he saw the full package up close.
“I witnessed some unbelievable things that he’s able to do in terms of running right, throwing left across your body on the money 40 yards down the field,” Stefanski recalled watching Rodgers from the sidelines. “I’ve had a front row seat.
He’s a Hall of Famer. You guys know how great he is.
We respect the player that he is and the ways he can beat you.”
Rodgers and Stefanski crossed paths again when Rodgers signed with Pittsburgh in 2025, putting the quarterback in the AFC North and back in the same division as Stefanski, then the Cleveland Browns head coach. The teams split their two meetings last season. Pittsburgh took the first one, 23-9 in October, before Cleveland answered with a 13-6 win in December.
Rodgers’ first year in Pittsburgh ended with a division title. He guided the Steelers to the 2025 AFC North crown and into the playoffs, though their run ended in the first round. In the regular season, he threw for 3,322 yards, 24 touchdowns and seven interceptions.
Stefanski’s teams have seen plenty of Rodgers over the years, and the quarterback has had the upper hand overall. Rodgers owns a 2-1 record against Stefanski-coached teams, including Green Bay’s 24-22 win over Cleveland on Christmas Day in 2021.
After two decades of watching him, Stefanski says Rodgers has only sharpened with time.
“Any experience you get, any reps you get, you get better as a thinker, you get better as a processor,” Stefanski previewed Rodgers before Sunday.
“At this point in his career, you’re not going to fool him, you’re not going to show him something he’s ever seen before. You’re just going to have to be about your business and understand that he’s a great player; he will make his players. And I think that’s from his physical ability and the amount of reps that he’s had at this game makes his processing so elite.”
Pittsburgh has also surrounded Rodgers with more help. Former All-Pro wide receiver DK Metcalf and newly acquired Michael Pittman Jr. give him a pair of receivers Stefanski called “big, physical,” and “fast.” In the backfield, the Steelers are using a running back-by-committee approach led by Jaylen Warren and Rico Dowdle.
There’s also a familiar face on the Pittsburgh sideline. Mike McCarthy is the Steelers’ new head coach, and he coached Rodgers in Green Bay for 13 seasons. The two won the Super Bowl together in 2011.
The Falcons, meanwhile, have a long hill to climb in this matchup. They are 2-16-1 all-time against Pittsburgh, their worst record against any NFL franchise, and they have not beaten the Steelers since 2006, when they pulled out a 41-38 overtime win at the Georgia Dome.
