Falcons May Have Found An Answer With A.J. Terrell Sidelined

Once overlooked, C.J. Henderson's perseverance is now paying dividends for the Falcons' defense in A.J. Terrell's absence.

C.J. Henderson has been chasing the version of himself that once made him a top-10 NFL Draft pick, and Monday night in Atlanta looked a lot like the breakthrough he’s been waiting for.

With A.J. Terrell on injured reserve, Henderson has been pressed into a starting job at cornerback.

He didn’t just cover for the Falcons in their win over the New Orleans Saints - he made impact plays all over the field. Henderson finished with 10 total tackles, added a pass deflection and forced a fumble he also recovered.

That kind of night is exactly what defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich had in mind when he spoke about Henderson earlier in the week.

“CJ is a tremendous luxury. In my opinion, he’s a one (cornerback). He’s a guy that would start on a lot of teams,” Ulbrich said.

Ulbrich also said Henderson gives Atlanta stability at corner while Terrell is out, and he wanted to see him “show this league exactly who he is now.”

Henderson answered with the biggest turnover of the game. His strip of Saints running back Kendre Miller produced the only takeaway in a game the Falcons controlled, coming with Atlanta up 7-0 early. Henderson said he felt ready for the moment.

“I had confidence. I’ve been working on my craft, you know, and letting my work come to life,” Henderson said.

The added responsibility matters even more now that Terrell is on injured reserve. Atlanta needed Henderson to step into a larger role in the secondary, and the former No. 9 overall pick responded.

“I’m out there attacking the ball, making plays,” Henderson said. “I feel like I can help this team.”

Henderson’s path to this point has been anything but smooth. Jacksonville took him ninth overall in 2020 with hopes he’d become a foundation piece in the secondary, but injuries and uneven play slowed him down. The Jaguars traded him to Carolina during the 2021 season.

He spent three years with the Panthers as a part-time starter, then spent 2024 on the Texans’ and Steelers’ practice squads without appearing in a game.

Atlanta gave him another chance last season, and Henderson has taken his game up a level in 2026.

The Falcons’ secondary played with confidence all night, and Henderson pointed to preparation and trust as the reason the unit looked so sharp.

“Just by doing our job, trusting our keys, trusting our training,” Henderson said. “That’s what we harp on during the week.”

He also admitted there’s still work to do in the back end, but Monday was the kind of showing Atlanta could use while Terrell remains sidelined. Henderson was one of the Falcons’ most productive defenders in the win, and the numbers backed it up: 10 tackles, a forced fumble and recovery, and a pass breakup.

Now comes the harder part - doing it again.

“I feel good,” Henderson said. “When you have a lot of confidence coming in, I mean, I’m still in there. We’ve got to finish on it.”

For Henderson, it was a night that showed the work is starting to show up when it counts. For the Falcons, it may have revealed more cornerback depth than they realized.

Matt Ryan's Falcons Role Has Rival Teams Paying Attention

Matt Ryan has wasted little time making himself visible in his new role as the Falcons president of football. Since taking the job this offseason, he has been around training camp and games, signaling that his return to the organization is more than ceremonial and that he is already immersed in the day-to-day work of helping shape the franchises direction.

Around the league, that kind of hands-on involvement is drawing notice. Some insiders sound more intrigued by Ryans singular focus on rebuilding Atlanta than they do by Tom Bradys dual role with the Raiders, and that contrast has only sharpened the conversation about how much influence Ryan could end up having on the Falcons future. Falcons May Have Found Avieon Terrells Best Role Already

Avieon Terrell has spent his first month in the NFL showing the kind of versatility that makes coaches lean in. The Falcons second-round pick has lined up both at nickel and on the outside, giving Atlanta a look at how quickly he can handle different responsibilities in the secondary while he settles into the league.

Lately, the trend has pointed more clearly toward the boundary. Terrells snaps outside have increased, including a game against the Saints in which he played 35 of 36 snaps there, and defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich has suggested that his long-term home is expected to be on the edge. Even with that direction taking shape, Terrell still brings the flexibility to move inside when Atlanta needs it. [Read more 🡒]

Falcons Are Finally Getting The Respect This Start Demands

After an 0-2 start, the Falcons have spent the last two weeks looking more like the team they expected to be, and that uptick is starting to show up beyond the building. Colin Cowherd slid Atlanta to No. 8 in his Week 5 Herd Hierarchy, pointing to the growth of quarterback Michael Penix Jr. as a major reason the team is suddenly getting more national attention.

Penix has started the Falcons' last two games, completing 73 percent of his passes with a 113 passer rating, and Atlanta has turned those performances into consecutive wins. The offense has looked sharper under head coach Kevin Stefanski, and now the challenge gets tougher with the Ravens on deck, a matchup that should say plenty about whether this early surge is the start of something more lasting.
