Jessie Tuggle, the legendary linebacker who once anchored the formidable Atlanta Falcons defense, is keeping a keen eye on the future of his beloved team. Tuggle was a cornerstone of the Falcons' defense, especially during their 1998 Super Bowl run when they boasted the second-best run defense in the league.
Now, Tuggle is eager to see which young Falcon will rise to the occasion and become the defensive leader the team needs. "I’m looking forward to seeing what the next young inside linebacker’s going to be," Tuggle shared on the Falcons’ Friday Five Podcast. "Who’s going to step up and take control and be the quarterback of the defense?"
One name that stands out to Tuggle is Harold Perkins Jr., a potential gem from the 2026 NFL Draft. The Falcons snagged Perkins with their sixth-round pick, 215th overall, bringing in a versatile linebacker from LSU.
Perkins is known for his speed and adaptability, capable of playing inside and outside linebacker, rushing off the edge, and even covering as a safety. Despite being a projected first-round pick, a torn ACL in 2024 saw his draft stock plummet. However, Perkins bounced back in 2025, earning All-SEC honors for the third time and impressing scouts with a blazing 4.38-second forty-yard dash at his LSU pro day.
Since joining the Falcons, the 21-year-old Perkins has been honing his skills with the inside linebackers, aiming to fill the void left by Kaden Elliss, who departed for the New Orleans Saints.
Tuggle is optimistic about Perkins' potential. "I’m hoping, without even seeing much about him in college…I like Perkins a lot.
I think that’s a great pick, super athletic," Tuggle said. "Mentally, I talked with him.
He wants it. We talked about the love for the game - he has the love for the game.
But not only does he have the love for it, [but he also] has the talent for it. And he has the speed.
So, I’m hoping that can translate into a middle linebacker that can really run to the ball."
The Falcons' defense, under the guidance of defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich, made strides last season, finishing 15th in total defense, a notable improvement from their 22nd ranking in 2024. They also set a franchise record with 57 sacks, ranking second in the NFL, and were 13th in pass defense. However, their run defense lagged, placing 24th in the league.
As Atlanta heads into the second year with Ulbrich at the helm, the defense features promising talents like defensive ends James Pearce Jr. and Jalon Walker, a strong secondary led by AJ Terrell and Jessie Bates, and the emerging star power of Perkins. Linebacker Divine Deablo will be the defensive play-caller, wearing the green dot for the Falcons in the 2026 season.
"Defensively, young. But didn’t have that star power," Tuggle commented on the Falcons’ defensive overhaul.
"Obviously, we got AJ, you got Jessie Bates. Then we brought in the young, talented outside pass rushers.
And they’re going to be here for the next hopefully five or 10 years."
Tuggle appreciates the direction in which the Falcons' defense is heading, confident that the blend of youthful energy and seasoned leadership will yield positive results for years to come.
