The Falcons have turned over another piece of their offensive line depth, bringing in former Lions lineman Colby Sorsdal and moving on from rookie center James Brockermeyer.
Atlanta signed Sorsdal to the practice squad, adding a player with three seasons of NFL experience and a background that fits the kind of versatility teams love to stash on the back end of a roster. To make room, the Falcons released Brockermeyer, an undrafted rookie who arrived with a strong college résumé of his own.
Sorsdal entered the league as a fifth-round pick of the Lions in the 2023 NFL Draft, going 152nd overall out of William & Mary. He spent five seasons with the Tribe and started all 46 games he played there. His senior year in 2022 was especially strong: he earned first team All CAA honors and first team FCS All American recognition while helping William & Mary finish 11 and 2 and rank third nationally with 265.8 rushing yards per game.
What also stands out with Sorsdal is the flexibility. Before the draft, he worked at tackle, guard and center, which gave him experience all across the line. That kind of background mattered to Detroit, and it should matter to Atlanta too.
Sorsdal played in 16 games as a rookie in 2023 and made three starts, including one at right guard against the Las Vegas Raiders. He has appeared in 17 regular season games in his NFL career.
Brockermeyer, meanwhile, came to Atlanta in May after stops at Alabama, TCU and Miami. He played in 44 games across those four seasons, with his biggest starting run coming at TCU, where he started 12 games and picked up All Big 12 honorable mention recognition. According to Miami, he gave up just one sack and eight quarterback pressures that season.
His college profile was impressive long before that. Brockermeyer was a unanimous four-star recruit and was ranked the nation’s top center by ESPN, PrepStar and the 247Sports Composite coming out of high school.
Atlanta had viewed him as a developmental center behind Ryan Neuzil. During the offseason, the team pointed to his time in multiple offensive systems at Alabama, TCU and Miami, and he also got a chance to work with the starting offense during OTAs when veteran centers were unavailable.
Now the Falcons are choosing the more seasoned option, adding a lineman who has already been tested in NFL games and can handle multiple spots if needed. For Brockermeyer, the release is a setback after joining the team as an undrafted free agent, but his experience at three Power Four programs could still draw interest elsewhere.
