The Browns’ quarterback picture is already messy enough, but a hypothetical trade proposal has somehow found a way to make it even louder.
Bleacher Report analyst Kristopher Knox floated a “Bold trade predictions before the 2026 NFL season kicks off” idea that would send Tua Tagovailoa to Cleveland, with the Browns dealing Dillon Gabriel to Atlanta in return for Tagovailoa and a conditional 2027 first-round pick.
That kind of swap would tug both teams deeper into their quarterback uncertainty. Cleveland is set to roll with Deshaun Watson after what the source described as an underwhelming competition, while Atlanta still hasn’t named a starter. Knox pointed to Kevin Stefanski’s ties to his former team as part of the backdrop for the idea.
“Atlanta also has Cooper Rush and undrafted free agent Jack Strand in its quarterback room. However, Tagovailoa and Penix are most likely the only quarterbacks that the new regime views as potential long-term options.
If they fail to impress, the Falcons will probably begin evaluating 2027 QB prospects,” wrote Knox. “Along the way, the Falcons could look to add another potential bridge quarterback by trading for Cleveland Browns third-stringer Dillon Gabriel.”
On paper, there is a clean logic to it. The Browns do not appear to view Shedeur Sanders as ready, at least not enough to bypass Watson. Tagovailoa would give Cleveland another veteran presence and a quarterback with real NFL experience.
Gabriel also fits Atlanta in a more practical way. Stefanski was high on him, and while he would not be taking Michael Penix Jr.’s job, he already knows the offense and would give the Falcons a backup option for an injury-prone quarterback. He is also the clear odd man out in Cleveland, so a reset would make sense for him.
Still, this is the kind of move that could turn into a circus fast. Cleveland already has enough public-relations noise around Shedeur’s fan base, and bringing in another quarterback would send social media into overdrive.
And there is also the football side of it. Tagovailoa has not exactly looked like the answer either, with the source noting he looked unplayable in the preseason and cannot push the ball downfield. A conditional pick would help, but if the Browns were going to be forced to start Tagovailoa anyway, the argument is that they might as well stay with Shedeur or even Taylen Green.
The only real case for the deal would be doing right by Gabriel. Even then, with all the extra noise attached, the source suggests Cleveland might be better off simply releasing him.
