Matt LaFleur made the call most coaches avoid: he left Jordan Love out there for all 60 minutes.
Even with the game long gone, Love never came off the field in the Green Bay Packers’ 35-14 home loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Sept. 24 at Lambeau Field. The Packers’ quarterback finished 28 of 53 for 312 yards, two touchdowns and one interception, absorbing hit after hit behind an offensive line that was missing two starters. Green Bay got almost nothing going on the ground, finishing with 17 rushing yards, while Atlanta rolled to 242 rushing yards and 498 total yards.
The result turned sour fast. Green Bay jumped ahead 7-0, then watched Atlanta rip off 27 straight points as boos started to cascade from the 76,955 in the stands. The home opener didn’t change the script once Michael Penix Jr. settled in.
LaFleur didn’t try to duck the obvious question afterward. “Just trying to get something going … just trying to play your way out of it,” he told reporters, words Rob Demovsky shared on X minutes after the game.
The fuller explanation came later. “To get something going, like, try to.
You’re just trying to play your way out of it. And certainly I knew the risk there.
I never like seeing him get hit like that. And yeah, so that’s why we kept rolling,” LaFleur said in comments carried by AtoZ Sports.
Love did give Green Bay a pair of touchdowns, hitting Christian Watson on a 4-yard score in the first quarter and Matthew Golden on a 15-yard touchdown in the fourth. But by then the damage was done. The Packers also came up empty on fourth-and-1 in the red zone in the third quarter and had a field goal blocked earlier, two more wasted chances in a night already slipping away.
Atlanta’s offense controlled everything once it got moving. Penix, back from a torn ACL, went 18 of 25 for 256 yards and a touchdown.
Drake London was a nightmare for Green Bay, catching nine passes for 194 yards. Bijan Robinson added 194 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries.
According to the Falcons’ official recap and box score on packers.com, Atlanta held the ball for 37:05 and converted 6 of 10 third downs.
Green Bay’s rushing attack never showed up. MarShawn Lloyd led the Packers with 11 yards on four carries, and without Josh Jacobs on the commissioner-exempt list, Love was forced into a huge workload. He dropped back 53 times, which was exactly the kind of night LaFleur said he wanted to avoid.
“If you would have told me we’re going to drop back 50-some-odd times, I’d say it’s probably not a good night for us,” he said in the same AtoZ Sports piece.
The numbers told the story plainly. Atlanta outgained Green Bay 498-329, owned the run game 242-17, and spent nearly 14 more minutes with the ball.
The Packers fell to 1-2, and the loss marked their first home opener defeat since 2012. Atlanta also moved to 1-2, as noted in the Reuters game story and the ESPN recap after the final whistle.
LaFleur called the night a “butt-whooping” in comments first published by NBC Sports, and he didn’t try to place the blame all on the offensive line. He said the responsibility was shared. The film, as always, will sort out the details, but the basic picture was clear: missed assignments, stalled drives, and a defense that couldn’t get off the field once Penix found London and Robinson found room.
Now Green Bay has a short week to clean it up. Love will be under center again Sunday, Oct. 4, and the real question is whether the pieces around him look any different.
