Christian McCaffrey gave the 49ers a scare, then gave them something they badly needed: he came back.
The San Francisco running back returned to action against the Atlanta Falcons after heading to the locker room with a thigh injury. McCaffrey had been listed as questionable, but he re-entered the game on the first drive of the third quarter.
The injury appeared to surface in the first quarter, and he later spent time in the blue medical tent in the second before making his way to the locker room. Before leaving, McCaffrey had already done plenty of damage.
He finished the first half with four carries for 29 yards and a touchdown, then added a carry for minus-2 yards on his first run after returning. He also caught three passes for 45 yards.
McCaffrey entered the game with 77 carries for 350 yards and seven rushing touchdowns, plus 28 receptions for 190 yards through six games this season. In Brock Purdy’s offense, he remains the kind of dual-threat weapon that changes everything when he’s on the field.
That’s why the injury moment landed so hard for San Francisco. McCaffrey has dealt with a long list of physical setbacks in recent seasons, including a PCL sprain that cost him five games in 2024, a pedal Achilles sprain that sidelined him for eight games that same year, a left calf strain that kept him out one game in 2023, and a pedal ankle sprain plus a thigh hamstring strain that each cost him five games in 2021.
The 49ers were already short-handed at wide receiver, with Mike Evans (ribs/Achilles), Deebo Samuel (hamstring), Demarcus Robinson (IR), De'Zhaun Stribling (IR) and Ricky Pearsall (IR) all unavailable. That made McCaffrey’s return even more important for an offense trying to keep moving.
Behind him, the running back room includes rookie Kaelon Black and second-year back Jordan James. Against Atlanta, Black has led the team with 11 carries and 60 rushing yards. For the season, McCaffrey still leads San Francisco in carries and rushing yards, with Black next and their quarterback third.
For most of his career, that’s been the story with McCaffrey: production, volume and control of the ground game. Outside of 2024, when injuries limited him to four games, he has led the team in rushing yards, including two seasons over 1,000 yards.
Across 10 NFL seasons, McCaffrey has logged 1,735 carries for 7,939 yards and 69 rushing touchdowns. The former first-round pick went No. 8 overall to the Carolina Panthers in the 2017 NFL Draft and stayed there until 2022, when he joined the 49ers.
San Francisco entered the moment trailing 19-14 as it tried to stay undefeated.

Raheem Morris Returns With A Test Michael Penix Must Answer
Raheem Morris is set to come back to Atlanta in a new role, this time guiding the undefeated 49ers defense instead of running the Falcons. For a team still trying to settle in under Michael Penix Jr., the matchup adds a familiar face to an already meaningful stretch, especially with the quarterback facing another early test in his development.
Penix, the No. 8 overall pick in the 2024 draft, is expected to see Morris across the sideline when San Francisco visits. The reunion gives the Falcons a look at a coach who once led their sideline, and it puts Penix in front of a defense built to make life difficult as Atlanta tries to keep moving forward. Christian Harris Falcons Revival Is Slipping Away Fast
Christian Harris came to Atlanta this offseason looking for a reset, hoping the Falcons could offer the kind of fresh start that once seemed out of reach after injuries knocked him out of his job with the Texans. He got an early look during OTAs and appeared to have a path into the linebacker mix, but the room has shifted quickly around him as younger players have pushed their way up the board.
What looked like a chance to revive his career has now turned into a waiting game, and not a very encouraging one. Harris has slid behind Kendal Daniels, Harold Perkins Jr. and others, leaving him with a shrinking role and a spot on the roster that feels increasingly fragile as the season goes on. [Read more 🡒]
Drake London Exit Put Falcons Offense In A Tense Spot
For a stretch in the third quarter against the 49ers, the Falcons had to make do without Drake London after he went off the field for a concussion evaluation following a helmet-to-helmet hit. Atlanta was already leaning on its top wideout, and before the injury scare, London had a team-high five catches for 43 yards, a reminder of how central he has become to the offense.
The good news for the Falcons was that London was eventually cleared and returned to the game, easing what could have been a much bigger concern in a tight spot. Even so, any time a receiver with that kind of role leaves the field after a hit like that, it puts the offense on edge and leaves Atlanta watching closely for the next update. [Read more 🡒]
