NFL fans are already fed up with the league’s Week 3 primetime slate, and the frustration is loud enough that Roger Goodell is catching the heat.
The issue is not the Sunday afternoon window. It is the three standalone night games the NFL has lined up: Atlanta at Green Bay on Prime Video at 8:15 p.m.
ET on Thursday, Los Angeles at Denver on NBC at 8:20 p.m. on Sunday, and Philadelphia at Chicago on ESPN at 8:15 p.m. on Monday. Fans on social media have been clear about which part of the schedule they want changed.
That anger has been building around Atlanta in particular. The Falcons are being put in national windows for the third straight week, and that’s become the biggest target for complaints. They opened this stretch on Thursday, then are back for Monday Night Football in Week 4 at New Orleans, and then again on Sunday night in Week 5 against Baltimore.
Atlanta’s form hasn’t helped its case. The Falcons are 0-2 after a 34-3 loss to Carolina and have scored just 16 points across two games.
Green Bay is 1-1 after an overtime win over the Jets, while Denver and the Rams are both 1-1. Philadelphia enters the week at 2-0, and Chicago is 1-1 after a 9-3 loss to Minnesota.
The reactions online were brutal.
“What a boring MNF. And our reward on Thursday? Falcons-Packers,” radio host Mark Gunnels wrote.
“Nobody wants to watch the Falcons in primetime 3 weeks in a row,” one user added.
“The next three weeks the Falcons play Thursday night, Monday night and Sunday night. These about to be the worst games ever,” another account declared.
“There's not a singular chance I’m watching Packers vs Penix and the Falcons,” one user said.
“One of the NFL’s worst scheduling tendencies is stacking primetime teams to start the season,” Jon Benne wrote, noting Atlanta’s three-night run.
Even with all that backlash, the league’s hands are tied by its own flex rules. Sunday Night Football flexing doesn’t begin until Week 5, Monday Night Football flexing opens in Week 12, and Thursday Night Football flexing is limited to Weeks 13 through 17. In other words, the change fans want is not available right now.
That matters because Week 1 already took a 13 percent ratings hit after the Wednesday kickoff and the split late windows. The league still leans on its night games to carry the brand, but this week’s slate has drawn criticism because the strongest matchups are sitting in the afternoon instead.
Eagles-Bears is the cleanest of the three primetime games, though even that one comes with Chicago’s three-point showing and Caleb Williams’ troubling injury. Thursday’s Falcons-Packers matchup also has Michael Penix Jr. slated to make his season debut in Green Bay after last year’s torn ACL.
Still, the broader complaint remains the same: the best games are not in the night slots, and the NFL cannot simply move them out unless it changes its flex calendar.
