That naturally puts a veteran like Tagovailoa on the board. He has real starting experience from his time in Miami, and Joe Schoen has reportedly called Ian Cunningham. But that doesn’t mean Atlanta should treat this like a chance to get clever.
The Falcons would be helping the Giants and hurting themselves.
Michael Penix Jr. looked sharp in Thursday night’s season debut and helped lead a 21-point win over the Green Bay Packers, but that only makes Tagovailoa more valuable to Atlanta, not less. If Penix has already shown he can miss time, then the backup behind him becomes a major part of the equation. Tagovailoa is not just another name in the room; he’s the insurance policy.
And that’s why the Falcons should not even consider moving him unless the return is outrageous - something like a third- or fourth-round pick, or a player along the lines of Kayvon Thibodeaux. Day 3 picks don’t come close to matching what Atlanta would be giving up. This quarterback room is already thin enough without making it thinner just because another team is desperate.
Tagovailoa may never get the starting opportunity he hoped for when he signed with Atlanta, but that doesn’t make him expendable. He came in on the league minimum in free agency, and on a cheap, expiring deal, he’s exactly the kind of backup a team wants to keep close.
If Atlanta trades him, it puts the Falcons one Penix injury away from having to fall back on Cooper Rush again, and that experiment already went badly last time. Jack Strand, meanwhile, isn’t ready to be a QB2 yet.
This is one of those situations where the simplest answer is the right one. Take the emotion out of it, and the math still points the same direction: Tagovailoa helps the Falcons more by staying put.
