The Falcons got the news they feared about Jalon Walker, and it landed exactly as badly as expected.
Tests on Wednesday confirmed the second-year linebacker tore the ACL in his left knee after getting hurt during Tuesday’s practice. The injury will cost him the season and wipes out what Atlanta had hoped would be a major leap forward in 2026.
That’s a brutal blow for a defense that had started to see Walker as one of its most important young pieces. Falcons outside LBs coach John Timu summed it up well during a Wednesday news conference.
Atlanta took Walker with the No. 15 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft after his standout run at Georgia, and he looked the part right away. He played in 15 games, started nine, and finished third on the team with 5.5 sacks while adding 13 pressures, according to Pro Football Reference.
The expectation around him only grew after that rookie season. Former Pro Football Focus analyst Dalton Wasserman pointed to Walker as a second-year breakout candidate shortly after the 2025 season, highlighting his 81.3 run-defense grade, which ranked No. 6 among edge-rushers.
"Walker was supposed to go through a longer transition period in the run game as he made the move from [off-ball] linebacker to edge-rusher," wrote Wasserman. "If he maintains that production while continuing to improve as a pass-rusher, he could soon become a bona fide star."
That kind of development had given Falcons fans real hope for the direction of the defense. Atlanta finished 8-9 and missed the playoffs last season, but it still ranked second in the NFL in sacks with 57, trailing only the Denver Broncos’ 68.
Now that optimism takes a hit, and the timing makes it sting even more. Second-year linebacker James Pearce Jr. is also likely to face a suspension. Pearce was arrested in February on three felony charges, which will be cleared if he completes a diversion program as part of a legal arrangement.
Walker’s loss also piles pressure on a team with questions on offense. The Falcons are in a starting quarterback battle between Tua Tagovailoa and Michael Penix Jr., and the winner may have to shoulder more of the load if the defense looks thinner than anticipated.
