The Falcons got a timely boost on Tuesday in Indianapolis, and it came from a name that matters a lot on Jeff Ulbrich’s defense: Divine Deablo.
Atlanta had already welcomed Jessie Bates and Xavier Watts back onto the practice field, but the first of two joint sessions with the Colts brought another encouraging sight. Deablo, who had missed the past week-and-a-half after rolling his ankle during “Saturday Night Lights” practice, was back with the team.
Per the AJC’s Daniel Flick, Deablo was spotted at practice and went right back into his spot with the starting defense. That’s a big deal for a Falcons team trying to hold things together on defense while its pass rush is, as the source puts it, being held together by duct tape.

When Deablo first got hurt, Kevin Stefanski said he’d be back “sooner rather than later,” but the Falcons still played it safe. With the regular season still weeks away, there was no reason to push it.
The point has always been Week 1, and sitting him for a couple practices was the sensible move. That decision looks even better now, especially with rookies Kendal Daniels and Harold Perkins Jr. handling things well while he was out.
There’s a strong case that the 27-year-old is the most important piece on Atlanta’s defense, particularly with Jalon Walker and James Pearce Jr. both expected to miss more time. Xavier Watts is in that conversation too, but a linebacker in the middle of the unit carries a different kind of weight than a safety.
The numbers back up the eye test. With Deablo on the field, Atlanta ranked seventh in the NFL in offensive points allowed. During the four games he was on IR in 2025, that number dropped all the way to 26th.
A converted safety out of Virginia Tech, Deablo brings range, coverage ability and the kind of versatility that lets him operate as the backbone of the defense. He moves with ease and can cover ground all over the field, which is a big reason he proved to be such a strong free-agent pickup.
For the Falcons, getting him back now is about as close to ideal timing as it gets.
