The Falcons get a shot at Tyler Shough on Monday night, and this looks like the kind of matchup Atlanta’s defense was built to ruin.
Shough has become one of the early storylines of 2026, and the Saints’ hot start has fed plenty of the buzz. Through three weeks, only Bryce Young has more passing yards among NFL quarterbacks, and only Kirk Cousins and Brock Purdy have thrown more touchdown passes. That kind of production has put Shough squarely in the spotlight, but Atlanta has already shown it can dim that light.
This will be the Falcons’ third crack at Shough, and the first two meetings went Atlanta’s way. The Falcons swept New Orleans last season, including a Week 18 win, and if the defense shows up again, they have a real chance to make it three straight.
Jeff Ulbrich’s defense has already had Shough’s number. In two career games against Atlanta, he has a 78 passer rating, has thrown an interception in both matchups, and has only one touchdown pass. For all the noise around Shough, the Falcons have consistently been the team making life difficult for him.
That challenge gets even steeper for New Orleans because of the personnel around him. Without Travis Etienne, the Saints are expected to be inefficient on the ground, which means the passing game is going to carry the load. They also won’t have starting left tackle Kelvin Banks Jr., opening the door for Atlanta’s pass rush to take over.
And that pass rush has been living in opposing backfields all season. The only quarterback sacked more than the second-year man out of Louisville is Bucs starter Baker Mayfield, who is now hurt. Atlanta, meanwhile, leads the NFL in pressure rate at 44..2% and ranks third in pass-rush win rate at 61%, and that’s before even accounting for James Pearce Jr. and Jalon Walker, both of whom gave Shough problems last season.
That is a brutal setup for the Saints quarterback. Za’Darius Smith has turned back the clock, Cameron Thomas has emerged as a surprise breakout, and Gervon Dexter has been elite. Maason Smith and Brandon Dorlus have also stood out on this front as well, giving Atlanta plenty of ways to attack.
Shough’s own ball security adds another layer to the pressure. He already has three interceptions this season, so if the Falcons’ rush starts closing in, there’s a real chance the mistakes follow.
And with A.J. Terrell out, Atlanta may need those takeaways to keep Mike Hughes from getting exposed for a long night.
The setup is clear: the Saints need Shough to carry them, and the Falcons are in position to make that a bad bet.

Falcons DT Maason Smith Has Extra Motivation In Saints Return
The Falcons head into Monday Night Football with a meaningful NFC South game on deck and a setting that carries a lot more weight than the usual division trip. Atlanta has played better lately behind key contributions from Michael Penix Jr. and Bijan Robinson, and the visit to New Orleans comes with the added backdrop of the 20th anniversary of the Saints' return to the Superdome after Hurricane Katrina.
For Maason Smith, the night brings a personal layer the Falcons will be watching closely. The defensive tackle will play in his hometown for the first time as an NFL player, and the building itself carries its own history for him after he tore his ACL there while at LSU. It is the kind of return that can sharpen a player's focus, and it gives Atlanta another reason to be locked in for a game that matters in the division. [Read more 🡒]
Buccaneers Suddenly Have A Baker Mayfield Problem They Can't Ignore
Through three weeks of the 2026 NFL season, the Buccaneers are the NFCs only winless team, and now their offense has to move on without Baker Mayfield for about three weeks because of a dislocated thumb. For Atlanta, that matters because the Falcons are trying to build off their first win and climb back into the race in a division that can shift quickly once one team loses its footing.
The Falcons sit at 1-2, and their outlook still leans heavily on how Michael Penix Jr. develops from here. Tampa Bays sudden uncertainty at quarterback only adds another layer to a division picture that already feels unsettled, with Atlanta looking for any opening it can get while the Buccaneers try to steady themselves before the gap gets wider. Falcons QB Picture Just Got More Interesting After Penixs Packers Win
Michael Penix Jr. has given the Falcons a little more clarity under center after his win over the Packers, locking in at least a second straight start as Atlanta keeps sorting out its quarterback picture. The move comes with Tua Tagovailoa still working back from an oblique injury, and the former Week 1 starter has already settled into a backup role while supporting Penix in the meantime.
Tagovailoa is expected to remain the primary backup when the Falcons head into their next game against the Saints, which adds a layer of stability even as the depth chart remains in motion. For Atlanta, the immediate question is no longer just who starts next week, but how the team manages the balance between Penix's momentum and Tagovailoa's return to full availability. [Read more 🡒]
