Falcons Clear Key Move for DL Sam Roberts Comeback

After a journey through multiple teams, defensive lineman Sam Roberts takes a key step toward rejoining the Falcons' lineup.

The Atlanta Falcons are getting a little more muscle back on the defensive line. The team has officially designated Sam Roberts for return from injured reserve - a move that could provide a timely boost as the regular season winds down.

Roberts, 27, has taken a winding road to this point. A standout at Division II powerhouse Northwest Missouri State, he was a three-time all-conference selection who made a name for himself with his relentless motor and physical presence in the trenches. That effort got him noticed by the Patriots, who used a sixth-round pick on him in the 2022 NFL Draft.

His rookie deal with New England was worth just over $3.8 million, including a $171,477 signing bonus. But like many late-round picks, Roberts had to fight for every opportunity.

After being released by the Patriots, he landed on the Bears’ practice squad. Not long after, the Panthers brought him in and eventually stashed him on their own practice unit to start the season.

Then came Atlanta - the team that gave Roberts his shot on the active roster. The Falcons promoted him in September, and he’s made the most of his limited opportunities.

In five appearances this season, Roberts has totaled 18 tackles, including one for a loss, and notched a sack. Those aren’t eye-popping numbers, but they’re solid contributions from a depth piece who’s still carving out his role.

Now, with his return from IR on the table, the Falcons could get a bit more rotational help up front. Roberts brings size, effort, and a journeyman’s edge - the kind of player who knows what it takes to stick around in this league.

And with playoff positioning on the line, every snap matters. Getting Roberts back in the mix could prove to be a quiet but meaningful move for Atlanta’s defensive front.
