Falcons Backfield Just Got The National Respect Fans Wanted

The Falcons bolster their backfield with Brian Robinson Jr., who earns accolades from Pro Football Focus alongside star Bijan Robinson.

The Falcons may have lost Tyler Allgeier in free agency, but they appear to have found a pretty clean replacement for the role behind Bijan Robinson.

Pro Football Focus released its latest running back rankings ahead of the 2026 NFL season, and Bijan Robinson came in at No. 1.

That part is hardly a surprise anymore. The former top-10 pick has lived up to the hype and then some over his first three seasons, and the buzz around him only keeps growing as Atlanta heads toward 2026.

What stood out for the Falcons was the nod PFF gave to Brian Robinson Jr. in its honorable mentions. Atlanta signed him to a one-year, $2.5 million deal in free agency after Allgeier left for the Arizona Cardinals on a two-year contract, and the move already looks like a smart piece of business.

"Robinson didn’t get a ton of action backing up Christian McCaffrey in San Francisco, but he does have three separate 700-yard seasons under his belt and forced 22 missed tackles across just 95 carries last season," wrote PFF's Dalton Wasserman and Max Chadwick. "He should be able to capably give Bijan Robinson a break when needed."

That’s the kind of backup profile Atlanta needed. Brian Robinson, 27, has logged 2,729 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns, plus 73 catches for 612 receiving yards, across his first four NFL seasons. He was once seen as a potential starter in Washington, and while he never fully became that bell-cow option, he still brings real value as a runner and receiver.

For a Falcons offense that is expected to lean on the screen game, he fits the job description well.

Allgeier also landed in PFF’s honorable mentions, with the outlet noting his fit in Arizona’s crowded backfield.

"Arizona may have the deepest backfield in the NFL with veterans James Conner and Tyler Allgeier alongside third overall pick Love," wrote PFF. "Meanwhile, Allgeier scored a career-high eight touchdowns last season, has not fumbled in his career and is a major asset in pass protection."

Both backs are now stuck behind former top-10 picks, but Atlanta’s new reserve may be the cleaner stylistic match. Brian Robinson doesn’t bring the same power Allgeier does, yet his versatility makes him a strong fit behind Bijan.

The Falcons still don’t have a clear No. 3 running back on the roster, though Tyler Goodson stood out at minicamp. That’s a spot worth watching when training camp opens.

Cash Jones Has A Chance To Become Falcons Camp X-Factor

Cash Jones has already given the Falcons something to watch once training camp opens, and it starts with a notable shift in how Atlanta plans to use him. The undrafted free agent is moving from running back to full-time slot wide receiver, a change that gives him a cleaner path to carve out a role while also asking him to prove he can handle a new job at the NFL level.

Atlanta already has four receivers viewed as roster locks, which leaves a small opening for the rest of the group to fight over. Jones is in that mix with Dylan Drummond, Chris Blair, Vinny Anthony and Keelan Marion, and every rep in camp and the preseason will matter as he tries to show he belongs in the conversation for one of the final receiver spots. Falcons Have One Camp Receiver Fans Need To Watch Closely

The Falcons entered the spring needing to reshape a receiver room that lost Darnell Mooney in March, and the front office has since added a handful of role players, including Olamide Zaccheaus and Jahan Dotson, as it looks for dependable answers. Even with those moves, the depth chart still feels open enough that training camp, set to begin in late July, should give several young receivers a real chance to force their way into the conversation.

One name to keep close tabs on is rookie Keelan Marion, who arrives with a productive college rsum across multiple schools and a path to meaningful snaps if he can separate himself in camp. Atlanta is clearly hoping an undrafted player can emerge and help fill out a thin wideout group, and Marion fits the profile of someone who could make the competition interesting once the pads come on. Matt Ryans Falcons Power Shift Changes Everything Before Camp

The Falcons are heading toward camp with a few important pieces already lining up behind the scenes. Rookies report July 24, veterans follow July 28 and the first official practice is July 29, so the next stretch should give Atlanta its first real look at how the roster fits together after a busy summer. Michael Penix Jr. has been throwing at a quarterback camp and is expected to be cleared for contact before camp, while Kyle Pitts new three-year extension also gives the club some added flexibility as it builds for the season ahead.

There is also a different kind of energy around the franchise now, with Matt Ryans presence in football operations adding another layer to the decision-making process. Atlanta has spent the offseason trying to sharpen both its present and future, from cap management to identifying the next wave of contributors, and the early buzz around Brandon Dorlus and Bijan Robinson only adds to that sense of momentum. The real test starts once the pads come on, but the shape of this team is already becoming clearer. [Read more 🡒]
