The Falcons are turning to a familiar free-agent type to reinforce the linebacker room, with former Vikings and Bengals linebacker Brian Asamoah II set to join Atlanta, according to NFL insider Jordan Shultz, who reported the move Wednesday morning.
Atlanta has leaned on a relatively small group at linebacker this season. The team has carried five players at the position on its active roster, and two of them - Kendal Daniels and Harold Perkins Jr. - are rookies who have carved out major roles.
Both have logged the bulk of the snaps next to veteran Divine Deablo. Behind them, Christian Harris and Josh Woods have filled reserve jobs and have handled their work on special teams.
Asamoah, 26, comes to the Falcons with a college résumé built at Oklahoma. He played in 37 games over three seasons from 2019 through 2021 and piled up 179 tackles, 13.0 tackles for loss, three forced fumbles, 5.0 sacks, five passes defended and an interception.
His best year in Norman came in 2021, when he posted 90 tackles, 4.0 tackles for loss, a sack and two forced fumbles. That season earned him second-team All-Big 12 honors before he entered the NFL Draft.
Minnesota took Asamoah in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft, selecting him No. 66 overall. He spent three seasons with the Vikings and finished with 30 tackles, including a career-high 17 as a rookie in 2022.
His path since leaving Minnesota has been a winding one. The Vikings waived him in 2025 during training camp, and he then moved around the league.
He signed with the Tennessee Titans that summer but did not make the roster. The Las Vegas Raiders later added him to their practice squad, only to release him two months after that.
Most recently, Asamoah was with the Cincinnati Bengals. He appeared in four games for Cincinnati in a special teams role and did not record any stats. A knee injury in Week 13 ended that stint early, and he was placed on injured reserve.
In Atlanta, Asamoah is expected to battle Woods and Harris for a depth and special teams job, pending a secondary announcement from the team.

Falcons DT Maason Smith Has Extra Motivation In Saints Return
The Falcons head into Monday Night Football with a meaningful NFC South game on deck and a setting that carries a lot more weight than the usual division trip. Atlanta has played better lately behind key contributions from Michael Penix Jr. and Bijan Robinson, and the visit to New Orleans comes with the added backdrop of the 20th anniversary of the Saints' return to the Superdome after Hurricane Katrina.
For Maason Smith, the night brings a personal layer the Falcons will be watching closely. The defensive tackle will play in his hometown for the first time as an NFL player, and the building itself carries its own history for him after he tore his ACL there while at LSU. It is the kind of return that can sharpen a player's focus, and it gives Atlanta another reason to be locked in for a game that matters in the division. [Read more 🡒]
Buccaneers Suddenly Have A Baker Mayfield Problem They Can't Ignore
Through three weeks of the 2026 NFL season, the Buccaneers are the NFCs only winless team, and now their offense has to move on without Baker Mayfield for about three weeks because of a dislocated thumb. For Atlanta, that matters because the Falcons are trying to build off their first win and climb back into the race in a division that can shift quickly once one team loses its footing.
The Falcons sit at 1-2, and their outlook still leans heavily on how Michael Penix Jr. develops from here. Tampa Bays sudden uncertainty at quarterback only adds another layer to a division picture that already feels unsettled, with Atlanta looking for any opening it can get while the Buccaneers try to steady themselves before the gap gets wider. Falcons QB Picture Just Got More Interesting After Penixs Packers Win
Michael Penix Jr. has given the Falcons a little more clarity under center after his win over the Packers, locking in at least a second straight start as Atlanta keeps sorting out its quarterback picture. The move comes with Tua Tagovailoa still working back from an oblique injury, and the former Week 1 starter has already settled into a backup role while supporting Penix in the meantime.
Tagovailoa is expected to remain the primary backup when the Falcons head into their next game against the Saints, which adds a layer of stability even as the depth chart remains in motion. For Atlanta, the immediate question is no longer just who starts next week, but how the team manages the balance between Penix's momentum and Tagovailoa's return to full availability. [Read more 🡒]
