The Falcons’ ugly 16-0 loss to the Buccaneers sent them tumbling in the eyes of some national analysts, even if not everyone was ready to bury them after a rain-soaked disaster in Tampa.
Atlanta was blanked in a torrential downpour, and Michael Penix Jr. threw four interceptions while the defense surrendered 324 rushing yards. Now the Falcons turn right around and head across the pond for Week 9, where Cincinnati waits with Joe Burrow and one of the league’s most dangerous offenses.
Burrow leads the NFL’s top passing attack at 288.4 yards per game, and the Bengals are also scoring 29.4 points per game, second-best in the league. With Atlanta’s offense having been one of the NFL’s better units since Penix returned in Week 3, the Falcons will need to keep up.
James Pearce Jr.’s return could prove pivotal.
Around the NFC South, the picture is messy too. The Panthers dropped their second straight game, and the Saints lost for the fourth time in their last five. Falcons OnSI gathered the latest national power rankings and lined them up against the rest of the division.
Conor Orr moved Atlanta down three spots after the loss, pointing to the weather as a major factor. He said the Falcons “missed an opportunity” to let Bijan Robinson take over, and even joked that they could have gone to the wildcat for better results.
Orr has the Buccaneers at No. 16, up seven spots, while the Panthers sit at No. 20 and the Saints at No. 26.
He ranks the Bengals No. 10.
Pete Prisco kept the Falcons in place, but he did not hold back on the performance. He called Michael Penix a “turnover machine” and said Atlanta’s defense was “gashed” in the run game, which he labeled a “recipe for disaster.”
In Prisco’s rankings, the Buccaneers are also No. 16, up seven spots, with the Panthers No. 18 and the Saints No. 26.
He has Cincinnati at No. 8.
Nick Shook was just as blunt, saying the Falcons “flopped about as hard as possible” against Tampa Bay. He pointed to missed chances on offense from both Penix and Bijan Robinson, and he criticized the defense for failing to slow Bucky Irving and Kenny Gainwell.
Shook has the Buccaneers at No. 16, up three spots, the Panthers at No. 21, down one, and the Saints at No. 28, down five. He ranks the Bengals No.
ESPN’s rankings took a slightly different angle, focusing on the best in-season trade acquisitions. Marc Raimondi highlighted Van Jefferson’s addition in 2023, which only underscored how thin the pickings have been for Atlanta.
ESPN has the Panthers No. 17, up one spot, the Buccaneers No. 18, up six, and the Saints No. 26, down one. The Bengals come in at No.

Falcons Trade Deadline Will Reveal How This Regime Views The Season
With the trade deadline creeping closer, the Falcons are in an awkward spot at 3-5, good enough to keep the season from feeling lost, but not quite settled enough to make their next move obvious. They have not been a central part of the rumor mill, and so far there has been no sign of a confirmed deal on the way, which leaves the front office with a familiar midseason question: do you add help and push, or start thinking more carefully about what comes next?
One name worth watching is Jessie Bates, who is in a contract year and playing well enough to draw attention around the league. Atlanta is not expected to move him, but his situation still says plenty about how the regime is viewing the season, and whether it sees this roster as one worth reinforcing or one that needs a longer look beyond November. Bijan Robinson Just Sparked A Debate Falcons Fans Will Feel
Bijan Robinson has been one of the few bright spots in a Falcons season that has not gone the way anyone in Atlanta wanted. Through eight games, the running back has piled up 780 rushing yards, four rushing touchdowns and added 25 catches for 203 yards with a score through the air, production that would normally put him squarely in the conversation among the leagues top backs.
Still, Robinsons own view of where he stands has added a different layer to the discussion. For a player carrying so much of the offenses load, his comments underscore a bigger truth for the Falcons: individual success only goes so far when the team is still searching for wins and a more complete rhythm on offense. Bijan Robinson Is Chasing A Rare Falcons Mark This Week
Bijan Robinsons all-around value has already made him one of the most important pieces of the Falcons offense, and now he is in position to add a little history to the mix in Week 9. The conversation around NFL milestones this season has been busy, with a few notable records already falling and others hanging in the balance, but Robinsons chase stands out because it speaks to how much Atlanta has leaned on him as a receiver out of the backfield as well as a runner.
The Falcons will get a chance to keep that momentum going in a setting that is a little different from the usual Sunday routine, and Robinsons workload could put him on the doorstep of a franchise mark that has belonged to some familiar names in Atlanta history. It is the kind of opportunity that gives a midseason trip extra weight for the Falcons, especially with a record within reach and a chance to leave the week with something more than just another win.
