The Braves’ latest playoff wrinkle is a familiar one: a useful midseason addition, now suddenly on the shelf when October is about to begin.
Lane Thomas, the veteran outfielder Atlanta picked up before the trade deadline, is expected to miss the Wild Card Series while he works back from a strained left intercostal muscle. That leaves the Braves short on the kind of reliable right-handed bat they had hoped to plug into the mix, at least for the opening round.
Thomas landed in Atlanta as part of a deadline move designed to help the outfield and deepen the lineup. ESPN described him this way: “The Braves acquired outfielder Lane Thomas and minor league left-hander Bailey Falter from the Royals in exchange for two minor league pitchers Saturday.
Thomas, 30, is slashing .232/.326/.393 in 97 games with the Royals this year. He has played mostly center field in Kansas City but will move over to left field in Atlanta and likely platoon with Mike Yastrzemski.
Thomas is a career .288 hitter against left-handed pitching,”
But the injury arrived quickly. MLB.com’s Mark Bowman reported, “The Braves’ outfield depth took a hit on Thursday when Lane Thomas strained his left intercostal while taking batting practice.
Thomas was scratched from the lineup approximately 20 minutes before the start of Thursday afternoon’s win over the Rays. On Friday, he was placed on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to Tuesday,”
Atlanta clinched the NL East title on Sunday, and with that box checked, the focus shifts fully to the postseason and the roster decisions that come with it. Bowman’s projected Wild Card roster does not include Thomas for the first series. Instead, he expects Hicklen to fill the backup outfield role.
“Hicklen gets the nod as a backup outfielder, with Lane Thomas expected to miss the Wild Card Series while recovering from a strained left intercostal muscle. While Thomas is sidelined, Dubón could play left field against left-handed starters. This would open the door for Kim to get a start at the shortstop position,” Bowman wrote.
That setup keeps Atlanta moving, even without the bat it added for this exact stretch. Hicklen has taken advantage of his chances this season, and the Braves appear ready to lean on that next-man-up approach until Thomas is healthy again.
Thomas has earned $31 million over the course of his career, and Atlanta will be waiting for him whenever he’s cleared. For now, though, the Braves are preparing to go into the playoffs without him.
