Bijan Robinson had plenty to say after the Atlanta Falcons’ 35-14 win over the Green Bay Packers on “Thursday Night Football,” and one line in particular stood out.
The Falcons running back, fresh off a night in which he piled up more than 200 yards of total offense and scored twice, pointed to a speech from coach Kevin Stefanski as a major reason for the team’s first victory of the season. Robinson said the message came after Atlanta’s 34-3 loss to the Carolina Panthers last week, and he went with a comparison that immediately turned heads.
“I think last week was a bigger testament to who he is just as a person, but as a coach,” Robinson said on set. “You know, obviously we lost how we did last week, and he went right to the locker room, and I don’t know if he drank some coffee or something, but he said this speech. It was like Martin Luther King was in there, man.”
Richard Sherman tried to interrupt with a “wait a minute,” according to Qwame Skinner of Awful Announcing, but Robinson kept rolling.
“He just brought everybody, all the players together,” Robinson continued, “and he was saying like, ‘Are we gonna let this loss define us? Is this who we’re gonna be as a team, or are we gonna just change it right now and, you know, try to flip the switch.'”
The Falcons did exactly that, helped along by the return of quarterback Michael Penix from injury. Robinson’s point was clear: the speech mattered, and Atlanta responded.
Still, the comparison to Martin Luther King was a jarring one. King’s work centered on Civil Rights, and his deep connection to the Atlanta area makes the remark even more loaded.
Robinson may have oversold the analogy, but there’s no question the Falcons looked like a different team after that turnaround.
