Bijan Robinson’s training camp hold-in is over, and the Falcons made sure it ended with a statement.
Atlanta has locked up its star running back on a three-year extension worth $75 million, with $51 million guaranteed. For now, that makes Robinson the highest-paid running back in NFL history. If not for Jeremiyah Love’s rookie contract guarantees, the guaranteed money would also stand as the biggest ever for the position.
The deal is the latest sign that the running back market has come roaring back to life. A few years ago, backs were mostly fighting for franchise tags and whatever guaranteed money they could pry loose.
That picture has changed fast, and Christian McCaffrey and Saquon Barkley helped drive the shift. McCaffrey is making $19 million a year with the 49ers, while Barkley is at $20.6 million per season with the Eagles.
Robinson’s extension keeps him in Atlanta through the end of the 2030 season. When you fold in the rest of his rookie contract, he can earn as much as $90.05 million over the next five years.
The Falcons had already paid Drake London, Kyle Pitts and even Matthew Bergeron this offseason, and Robinson was next in line. Now the new regime has taken care of its biggest offensive star, and in doing so, reset the market again.
Of course, in today’s NFL, “record-setting” rarely lasts long. Jahmyr Gibbs and his camp are already positioned to chase the next benchmark. But that’s a problem for another day.
For Atlanta, the important part is that the hold-in is done and the crown belongs to Robinson, at least for now. He earned it with the kind of production that puts him in rare company, including nearly 2,300 yards from scrimmage last season and a 1st-team All-Pro nod.
Robinson is part of the league’s running back renaissance, and he’s one of the few non-quarterbacks who can genuinely talk about MVP contention without it sounding far-fetched. Now that the contract business is finished, the Falcons can move on with their superstar in place and the chase for even bigger things back on track.
