Bijan Robinson Is Raising The Stakes For These Falcons

Bijan Robinson's explosive performance not only clinched a win for the Falcons but also solidified his place among the NFL's elite.

Bijan Robinson’s latest burst of brilliance has him back in the NFL spotlight.

The Atlanta Falcons running back was named the league’s NFC Offensive Player of the Week on Wednesday, six days after torching the Green Bay Packers on Thursday Night Football. Robinson piled up 194 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries in Atlanta’s 35-14 win on Sept. 26, finishing just one yard shy of tying his career high on the ground.

He also chipped in as a receiver, catching two passes for 19 yards in a game that gave the Falcons their first victory of the 2026 season. With quarterback Michael Penix Jr. back from injury, Atlanta’s offense looked reenergized, and Robinson was the engine driving it.

“Definitely the best football player I’ve ever seen in my life,” said Maason Smith, a defensive tackle for the Falcons. “He’s an even better human being outside of football. Sky’s the limit for him.”

The Packers game marked the third time Robinson has gone over 200 scrimmage yards in his NFL career, and it was his seventh career primetime game with at least 100 yards, a franchise record. Through three weeks, he leads the NFL with 467 scrimmage yards, the same category he paced last season.

Robinson’s production keeps stacking up fast. The former Texas Longhorns star and 2023 No. 8 overall pick became just the 10th player in NFL history to reach 6,000 career scrimmage yards before age 25.

He won’t turn 25 until Jan. 30, 2027.

“He’s going to be a gold jacket wearer,” Wide receiver Drake London said of Robinson’s Hall of Fame trajectory.

The award is only the latest item on a growing list of recognition for Robinson. In August, he signed a three-year extension worth up to $75 million with $51 million guaranteed, briefly making him the highest-paid running back before the Detroit Lions extended Jahmyr Gibbs days later. In September, he was voted No. 3 on the NFL’s top 100 players list.

First-year Falcons head coach Kevin Stefanski also named Robinson a team captain before the 2026 season, and he explained why in strong terms.

“When your best players are also your leaders, that’s a great testament to your roster,” Stefanski said.

“Bijan has his own leadership style, and just who he is every single day, that’s what I appreciate about him in the locker room, out on the field. Ultra positive, always looking to help out his teammates.

The skill level is also obviously off the charts. But just the impact he makes daily is really because of the person he is.”

Robinson and the Falcons are back on Monday Night Football on Oct. 5, heading to New Orleans to face the Saints. Atlanta enters at 1-2, while New Orleans is also 1-2. The game will mark the 20th anniversary of the “Domecoming” at Caesars Superdome.

A win, paired with a Carolina Panthers loss to Detroit, would put the Falcons alone atop the NFC South.

Falcons-Saints is set for 8:15 Eastern Time on ESPN.

Falcons DT Maason Smith Has Extra Motivation In Saints Return

The Falcons head into Monday Night Football with a meaningful NFC South game on deck and a setting that carries a lot more weight than the usual division trip. Atlanta has played better lately behind key contributions from Michael Penix Jr. and Bijan Robinson, and the visit to New Orleans comes with the added backdrop of the 20th anniversary of the Saints' return to the Superdome after Hurricane Katrina.

For Maason Smith, the night brings a personal layer the Falcons will be watching closely. The defensive tackle will play in his hometown for the first time as an NFL player, and the building itself carries its own history for him after he tore his ACL there while at LSU. It is the kind of return that can sharpen a player's focus, and it gives Atlanta another reason to be locked in for a game that matters in the division. [Read more 🡒]

Buccaneers Suddenly Have A Baker Mayfield Problem They Can't Ignore

Through three weeks of the 2026 NFL season, the Buccaneers are the NFCs only winless team, and now their offense has to move on without Baker Mayfield for about three weeks because of a dislocated thumb. For Atlanta, that matters because the Falcons are trying to build off their first win and climb back into the race in a division that can shift quickly once one team loses its footing.

The Falcons sit at 1-2, and their outlook still leans heavily on how Michael Penix Jr. develops from here. Tampa Bays sudden uncertainty at quarterback only adds another layer to a division picture that already feels unsettled, with Atlanta looking for any opening it can get while the Buccaneers try to steady themselves before the gap gets wider. Falcons QB Picture Just Got More Interesting After Penixs Packers Win

Michael Penix Jr. has given the Falcons a little more clarity under center after his win over the Packers, locking in at least a second straight start as Atlanta keeps sorting out its quarterback picture. The move comes with Tua Tagovailoa still working back from an oblique injury, and the former Week 1 starter has already settled into a backup role while supporting Penix in the meantime.

Tagovailoa is expected to remain the primary backup when the Falcons head into their next game against the Saints, which adds a layer of stability even as the depth chart remains in motion. For Atlanta, the immediate question is no longer just who starts next week, but how the team manages the balance between Penix's momentum and Tagovailoa's return to full availability. [Read more 🡒]
