The Gwinnett Stripers have unveiled their roster for the 2026 season, and while most names align with expectations, there's a notable absence: Jhancarlos Lara. After spending significant time with Gwinnett last season, his omission is the talk of the town.
Starting Rotation
Lara's absence is surprising, but Brett Sears is also missing after making a mark last year. Among those present, top prospect JR Ritchie stands out.
With a strong start, Ritchie could quickly find himself in Atlanta. Lucas Braun returns after a brief stint last year, and veteran Carlos Carrasco brings his wealth of experience with 286 major league starts.
Dylan Dodd and Elieser Hernandez are expected to round out the rotation, while Didier Fuentes is set to join later. The rotation will get even deeper when Spencer Strider, Spencer Schwellenbach, Hurston Waldrep, and possibly AJ Smith-Shawver return throughout the season.
Bullpen
Leading the relief corps is Hayden Harris, who impressed last year. Young arms Anthony Molina and Rolddy Munoz are also in the mix.
Veterans Ian Hamilton, Javy Guerra, Tayler Scott, and Hunter Stratton bring big league experience and could contribute to the Braves this year. The intriguing addition is James Karinchak, once a top reliever prospect with the Guardians, now aiming for a comeback after injuries sidelined him since 2023.
Anderson Pilar and Austin Pope complete this talented bullpen, making it a formidable group.
Catchers
Sandy Leon, with 559 big league games, headlines the catching trio. He'll share duties with Chadwick Tromp, who has seen action in Atlanta over the past four seasons, and Jair Camargo, a younger option with brief MLB experience. While none stand out as the clear starter, all three are solid choices at the Triple-A level.
Infield
Nacho Alvarez, though no longer a prospect, is the most intriguing young hitter. Jim Jarvis emerges as the top hitting prospect, despite being more of a utility player.
Rowdy Tellez, a recent signing, is expected to deliver power, potentially explaining David McCabe's absence. Aaron Schunk, a former Georgia Bulldog, should bolster the offense, along with contact hitter Luke Waddell and versatile Luke Williams.
This group looks poised to improve on past inconsistencies.
Outfield
The outfield may lack true prospects but boasts talent reminiscent of the 2021 squad featuring Cristian Pache and Drew Waters. Ben Gamel, Brewer Hicklen, and DaShawn Keirsey Jr offer power and could be called up to Atlanta if needed. Jose Azocar adds speed to the mix, bringing some big league experience as well.
Overall, the Stripers' roster is a blend of promising prospects and seasoned veterans, setting the stage for an exciting season in Gwinnett.
