The Braves may have hit their most nerve-wracking moment of the season at exactly the wrong time.
Ronald Acuña Jr., who has been carrying a scorching September stretch after an injury-filled year, left Tuesday night’s game after fouling a ball off his leg. There was no immediate update on how serious the injury is, but the exit alone was enough to send a jolt through Atlanta’s playoff hopes.
Acuña’s season has been defined by stop-and-start availability. He has missed 53 games because of injury, and outside of a strong May, when he hit .286 with five home runs, his offense had not quite matched his usual standard.
September, though, changed that tone fast. Through the first four games of the month, he was 8-for-18 with two homers, five RBIs and four runs scored, a stretch that had the Braves looking like they were getting their superstar back at the perfect time.
That’s why the timing of Tuesday’s exit landed so hard. Acuña is one of the best players in the league when healthy, and Atlanta was counting on him to be a major piece of its postseason push. The concern around Acuña has not been limited to the field, either. There has also been uncertainty about a possible extension, with Acuña open to it while Atlanta continues to sort through the situation.
MLB insider Ken Rosenthal said, “Now Acuña, I'm sure, would welcome talks for an extension because he'd had so many injuries, but I just don't see it happening. I do see him, in two years, becoming a free agent,”
For now, though, the bigger issue is the postseason. The Braves are preparing for the playoffs, which begin in a week, and Acuña’s status could determine just how dangerous this lineup really is. Even if he is able to return, there’s no guarantee he’ll have enough time to look like himself before October arrives.
At 28, Acuña is supposed to be one of the central figures in Atlanta’s run at another World Series. Losing him now, or having him limited when the games matter most, would be the kind of blow the Braves have been trying to avoid all year. Tuesday night may have turned that fear into reality.
