Ronald Acuña Jr. has spent most of the last several seasons with the same defensive reputation: the offense is electric, the arm can still flash, and the glove has usually been something Atlanta lived with rather than celebrated. That’s why what has happened over the last stretch has stood out so sharply.
For most of the 2026 season, Acuña’s work in the field looked a lot like the version Braves fans had seen since 2022. He sat at -9 OAA, though a handful of strong throws still helped keep his overall defensive value from looking even worse.
Then, after Walt Weiss sat him during the finale of the series against the Dodgers, the whole picture changed.
Since August 28, Acuña has been worth roughly 2 OAA in just eight games. He has also turned in three catches with a catch probability of 60% or harder.
Before this stretch, he had only one such catch all season. By Fielding Run Value, he has actually been Atlanta’s best defensive player during this run.
The numbers get even stranger when you widen the lens. From 2022 through 2025, Acuña had only one catch with a catch probability of 60% or harder, according to Baseball Savant.
In 2025, he caught only five balls that carried a 90% or harder probability, the kind classified as 2-Star catches. In the last 10 days alone, he has made six of them.
That’s a dramatic shift for a player whose routes to fly balls have generally been fine, even if his reaction times have long been the issue. Statcast has never given him a negative route rating, but the quickness off the bat has been a problem.
Last season he was -2.7 feet below average. This season, that number is -2.3 feet below average.
Now, though, the recent stretch points to better reads and a more aggressive approach in the outfield. Other than the day off, there isn’t an obvious explanation for the sudden change, but the results are hard to dismiss.
Acuña’s recent surge has come with the bat, too. If this version of him holds up through the end of the season, it could matter a lot for the Braves once the playoffs arrive.
